Years of hard labor have now accomplished an energy efficient National Stadium, satisfying the “Green Olympics” concept.
China’s National Stadium was inaugurated on June 28th, a day that will make history in the new vision of green conscience. The Bird’s Nest satisfies the green energy consumption requirements, having natural cooling and lightning capabilities.
Liu Qu, president of BOCOG, also a member of the CPC Central Committee and secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee was present at the celebratory ceremony. Li explains with excitement: “after years of effort, the National Stadium is finally completed. We hope that we can provide better services for the Olympic Games with better equipment.”
Pipelines under the grassy football field uses advance technology which can absorb heat from the soil in winter and coolness from the soil in summer. This produces a natural heating and air cooling system for Bird’s Nest Stadium.
Bird’s Nest is gracefully surrounded by a curved, decorative and double-layered membrane: the inner membrane’s main purposes are to better the acoustics in the stadium and to support the equipment within the steel frame. Another impressive characteristic that allows a more favorable competition is that this membrane can help lighting within the stadium and effectively diminish glare and shadowing. It’s outer layer was completed in November of 2007 and it offers UVA protection, is soundproof, wind-proof and rain-proof.
Another green advance is present in the drainage system; it collects rainwater and may even melt snow and ice during colder months for further use by the Bird’s Nest. This mechanism gets rid of water. The drained water is collected and treated for suitable recycled use such as irrigation or restroom water.
Guo Jinlong, vice-secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, Mayor of Beijing and executive president of BOCOG, was also present at the National Stadium's celebratory ceremony. He and Liu unveiled the National Stadium which construction began in December of 2003. Located in the Olympic Green, standing 68 meters high and holding 91,000 seats, the Bird’s Nest will serve as the main venue of the Athletics and Football events during the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. It will also hold the opening and closing ceremonies.
BOCOG executives and leaders from the government of Beijing were also present at the National Stadium's unveiling ceremony. It is already to go, the vice-mayor of Beijing and director of the Beijing 2008 project Chen Gang issued the certificate of inspection to the Bird’s Nest CEO Li Aiqing.
