Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Devil Rays
Brewers And Cards Face Off In National League Central BattleHappy day after 4th of July everyone. Today the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (48-33) host the Boston Red Sox (49-33). The Red Sox will send Daisuke Matsuzaka (5-3) to the mound to face Matt Garza (10-6). The books are favoring the Devil Rays and have them at -157 right now. That is a hefty price to pay in my opinion in a game where both teams are closely matched.

Some interesting trends for this game start with the OVER being 10-4 in Boston's last 14 Monday night games. The Red Sox are 7-3 in their last 10 games as underdogs. Lastly Boston is 20-7 in the past 27 games that Matsuzaka starts on the road. Yes the same Matsuzaka that everyone had on auto-fade last year. Although not worth anywhere near his hefty price tag, DiceK seems to have settled down and is pitching better in 2010. The fact that he pitches better on the road might say something about the pressure of pitching in Beantown.

Meanwhile Tampa Bay games go UNDER at a 7-2 clip following a win. As as team the Devil Rays are a paltry 2-7 after they win a game. On fieldturf Devil Ray games have gone under at an 18-7-2 rate.

Both teams realize the importance of this series. After being swept at home by Boston during the last series they played, the Devil Rays find themselves a ½ game out of second place. Garza who is 7-3 lifetime against the Red Sox needs to set the tone early. Boston is missing some key players and Jason Varitek went on the DL last week with a broken right foot. However, Tampa Bay knows it cannot take an injured Red Sox team lightly. With all of the injuries on the Boston team, they still have a lot of veterans that can get the job done and get the job done right. Look for the pitchers to set the tone in this game. If Tampa can get to Matsuzaka and get to him early, it will be a long game for the Red Sox. If both pitchers do well for the first five innings, the game will be close and may be decided by one run.

On a side note Tampa Bay had three players named to the All-Star team for 2010. Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria will join David Price in Anaheim this year. This is the first year that Tampa Bay will send multiple players to the All-Star game. Longoria has hinted that he will not compete in the home run derby if invited. This will be Crawford's fourth all-star appearance but his first start. Crawford was selected by the fans and finished 223,827 votes ahead of Nelson Cruz for the third and final spot. David Price who leads the AL in wins (11) and ERA (2.42) got the news on Sunday from his manager. It is up to Yankee skipper Joe Giradi to see if Price starts or not. Let's hope Joe takes a look at the stats and inserts Price into the starting lineup.
