Cincinnati Reds vs. Philadelphia Phillies
Cincinnati Reds vs. Philadelphia PhilliesThe upcoming series between the surging Reds and the underachieving Phillies is likely to be one of the best so far in 2010. Whenever one mentions the Reds, a few thoughts come to mind. Eric Davis is one, an old racist female owner is another and last but not least a big dog taking a dump on the field. Most of the times that dog and its' business would have symbolized the Red's season. Not this year my friends. This year the Cincinnati Reds are in first place and the National League Central has been turned upside down. Yes the Cardinals are only 1.5 games out and yes Albert Pujols is well Albert Pujols but what the Reds have down so far is simply amazing.

Fade to black or shall I say fade to red, white and blue and you have yourselves the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies finished 2009 losing to the New York Yankees in the World Series. Not the best end to a great season but the Phillies were supposed to start 2010 with a bang. Let's just say they started with a sound more like a thud. The Phillies are in third place right now and are 5 games behind the National League East leading Atlanta Braves. They have floundered down the stretch and are only 4-6 in their last 10 games. What's worse is the $125 million dollar man Ryan Howard is under performing. Throw all of that goodness into a city like Philadelphia and you have yourself a big bowl of wrong. The fans are not happy and why should they be? Their team is in third place and most of their hard earned money is going to one man.

This series is important to both teams for numerous reasons. If the Reds can go on the road and beat the Phillies it shows that they are a legitimate contender and not a one half season wonder. The naysayers will go down in flames if the Reds can come into Philadelphia and win 2 out of 3 games. Winning the series will also allow the Reds to put some distance between themselves and the surging St. Louis Cardinals. For Philadelphia, it is a MUST that the team win at least 2 out of 3 games. They are already 5 games behind the Braves and 2 games behind the New York Mets. Yes I said the New York Mets. The same Mets that are supposed to implode 20 games into each season. This series is pivotal for the Phillies and can lead to a positive or negative 2 to 3 game swing.

When all is said and done I like the Phillies. The Reds will be coming off a brutal series with the New York Mets and the Phillies will be well rested after hosting the Atlanta Braves. If the Phillies can steal a few wins from the Braves they can come into the Red's series with a full tank of gas. Look for experience and a better Philadelphia team to take two of three from the Reds.

The Reds and Phillies series starts July 8, 2010.
