Cubs Take On Astros In Monday Night Baseball
Cubs Take On Astros In Monday Night BaseballThe Chicago Cubs have struggled on the road this season, but they’ll try to improve their fortunes on Monday night as they head to Texas to take on the Houston Astros in a National League Central matchup. Chicago has played .500 ball at home but a losing record away from Wriggly Field has them well off the pace in the division. Houston hasn’t really played well in any situation this year, but they’ve been competitive for the most part at Minute Maid Field. The Astros primary salvation has been solid starting pitching from at least half of their staff, with Roy Oswalt and Brett Myers putting up decent numbers despite not getting much help from their teammates. Ironically, neither pitcher may be with the team much longer as both have been subjects of trade rumors in recent weeks.

Aside from their top two starters, Houston’s pitching rotation has been inconsistent. That problem has been compounded by a bullpen who’s ERA has hovered around or above 5.00 all season long. As shaky as the Astros’ pitching has been the offense has been an even bigger issue. Houston’s team batting average has ranked at or near the bottom of the National League, and they’re averaging just over 3.5 runs per game. It doesn’t take a baseball genius to realize that a combination of poor pitching and weak hitting won’t take a team very far.

The Chicago Cubs don’t have a glaring statistical deficiency like Houston does, and both their pitching and hitting ranks in the middle of the pack in the National League. Nevertheless, the Cubs have been unable to put everything together in order to avoid their lackluster W/L record. They’ve been a horrible investment from a betting standpoint losing over 20 units on the season. In a division where Cincinnati and St. Louis have left everyone else in the dust, both the Cubs and Astros have little hope of making the postseason.

In head to head play, Houston has been competitive with Chicago and due to the often inflated prices on the Cubs has shown a decent profit. The Astros have been able to hold their own against the other teams in the NL Central, and with a record of several games above .500 have earned bettors over ten units of profit in divisional play. Houston also has a winning record as a favorite—it doesn’t happen very often, but they’ve made money for baseball betting enthusiasts when it does.

In a matchup where both teams have serious statistical liabilities, the best play is to back the home standing Houston Astros. The Cubs have lost money for their backers at home and on the road, but in this spot you’re getting the Astros in a several strong situational spots. Due to injuries you’ll likely be able to get Houston as a very short favorite if not a small underdog.
