| Angels Acquire Haren For Stretch Run |
Haren is a Southern California native, and that made the move to Anaheim particularly attractive: "At this point, being on the West Coast has a lot of value to me, being near my family and going to a ballclub that is dedicated to winning. I am really excited about going there and having a chance to win." Angels’ manager Mike Scioscia is excited about his new addition to the starting rotation: "We really feel good about our starting five moving forward. This is a huge opportunity for us to upgrade not only now, but for the next couple of years. He's definitely a guy who has pitched in big games, has terrific stuff and he's a young veteran." Mike Saunders, who heads to Arizona in return for Haren, had played for eight years in the Angels’ organization and was shocked by the news when called into the clubhouse: "I thought he was going to say, 'Hey, we need you to go on three days' rest,' but Tony was in the office and, you know, it's hard. It's part of the game. I totally understand. It's a business. It's just tough leaving the guys." He’ll receive a warm welcome in Phoenix, where Diamondbacks’ interim GM Jerry Dipoto spoke of the deal: "Saunders brings an element to our club that I think we need. The prospects in the deal bring us talent that we need to build with. Therefore, I felt that this deal checked a lot of boxes for the Arizona Diamondbacks." Haren made his first start for the Angels on Monday against the Boston Red Sox, and things didn’t work out particularly well for him. The Angels lost 6-3 with Haren as the pitcher of record, and he had to leave the game after being hit on the forearm by a line drive. A follow up examination showed no serious injury and Haren is expected to make his next start as scheduled.

The Los Angeles Angels got off to a slow start this season and have been struggling to get back into the AL West championship picture. This past weekend they bolstered their pitching rotation for the stretch run with the acquisition of righthander Dan Haren from the Arizona Diamondbacks. In return, Arizona received starting pitcher Mike Saunders and two minor leaguers. Haren, along with Houston’s Roy Oswalt, have been the most prized starting pitchers by contending teams with the trade deadline approaching.
