| Cards Host Cubs As NL Central Race Heats Up |
St. Louis will be looking to make as much progress as possible in their remaining home games for the simple fact that their road performance in 2010 has been well below what you’d expect for an elite level team. The Cards have one of the best home records in the National League, but have played sub .500 ball away from Busch Stadium. The Cubs have been bad both at home and away, and are well under .500 in each venue. Chicago definitely isn’t improving as the season goes along—the Cubbies went on a 2-8 run in the early part of August. For Friday’s contest, the Cubs will start Thomas Diamond who was recently called up from Iowa of the Pacific Coast League to assume spot duty. Diamond has shown some promise since joining the big league club, but enters this matchup with an 0-2 record and a bloated 8.00 ERA. St. Louis will counter with the recently acquired Jake Westbrook, who has yet to produce a victory for the Cards in two starts. Despite his teams having lost his last four starts, Westbrook has pitched well since coming to the National League. He’s allowed only 5 earned runs while striking out 16 and walking only one. Word is that he really enjoys working with Cards’ pitching coach Dave Duncan though the ‘change of scenery’ could be as much of a reason for his recent good form as anything. The Cards have split six games with the Cubs this year, but with Chicago floundering of late and St. Louis needing to keep pace with Cincinnati that could change here. St. Louis hasn’t always given their pitchers good run support this season, but they shouldn’t have any trouble hitting Diamond while it could be a spot for Westbrook to pitch a very strong game. From a baseball betting perspective, it’s impossible to recommend Chicago in all but the most isolated spots—they’ve lost bettors right around 30 units this season and we look for St. Louis to win at least two of three over the weekend with the sweep a distinct possibility.

The St. Louis Cardinals are in a fierce battle with the Cincinnati Reds for the National League Central crown, and the two teams have long ago left the rest of the division in the dust. The neck and neck race will make every series crucial for both teams down the stretch, and that’s definitely the case for the Cards who’ll welcome the Chicago Cubs to the ‘Gateway City’ for a three game weekend series. The Cubs are just playing out the string at this point sitting in fourth place in the division sixteen games behind the leaders.
