Mets Head To Houston To Take On Astros
Mets Head To Houston To Take On AstrosWith both teams in the midst of a forgettable season, the New York Mets and Houston Astros are looking to finish strong and build momentum for the future. The two teams will meet on Monday, August 16th at Minute Maid Field in Texas. The Mets are currently in fourth place in the five team National League East, leading only the lowly Washington Nationals. Houston is in fourth place in the six team NL Central, though that’s due more to the horrible play of the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates than to any success of their own.

Houston got off to the worst start to the season in franchise history this year and never really recovered. They’ve begun to unload their high priced superstars, most notably starting pitcher Roy Oswalt who is now with the surging Philadelphia Phillies. The team is now in rebuilding mode, giving extensive playing time to younger players. Despite their slow start and losing record, they’ve shown promise at points in the season and have the ability to be competitive in certain situations. One of their strongest spots has been against teams with losing records in the second half of the season, and the Mets have been hovering around the .500 mark for much of the season.

The Mets would be in great shape if they could play their entire schedule at Shea Stadium. At home, New York is a solid and profitable team. On the road, they’re 22-37 for a -13.6 unit loss. New York has struggled on offense for most of the season—they’ve averaged 4.0 runs per game on the year but in the month of August have seen their run production slip to 3.5 per contest. They’ve also got off field distractions to deal with, primarily the legal issues of closer Francisco Rodriguez. ‘K-Rod’ has been suspended by the team due to his arrest for assaulting his girlfriend’s father. Initially, the suspension was for just two days but could be extended—in any case, it’s not exactly a boon to team chemistry.

The Astros are scheduled to start J.A. Happ, who came over from Philadelphia in the Roy Oswalt deal. Happ has been something of an enigma since arriving in Houston—he’s pitched very well at times but has a horrible strikeout/walk ratio. New York will counter with southpaw Jonathon Niese who at age 23 is quickly maturing into a solid major league starter bringing a 7-5 record and 3.50 ERA into this game. Niese continues to improve—he’s been working on minimizing his walks and shown considerable progress.

Successful baseball betting requires playing on teams in profitable situations and against them in losing spots. That strategy requires giving Houston a long look here. We mentioned the Mets horrible road record earlier, and for that reason alone they’re a ‘go against’ in almost every situation away from home. Happ has the potential for a very strong outing against the offensively struggling Mets, and Houston has been profitable against left handed pitching this year. The Astros aren’t a dominant home team, but with the Mets struggles away from Shea Stadium and a good record against southpaws they should take care of business here.
