Angels, Twins Face Off In Game With Playoff Implications
Angels, Twins Face Off In Game With Playoff ImplicationsThe Major League Baseball season is winding down, and 5 of the 6 divisional races are still very close with no more than 3.5 games separating the top two teams. The Los Angeles Angels would like to make it six for six and are trying to get themselves back in the mix for the AL West title. They’ll face a tough challenge on Friday night as they take on the AL Central leading Minnesota Twins at Target Field. The Twins are trying to put some distance between themselves and the second place Chicago White Sox.

Los Angeles was expected to mount a strong bid for the AL West crown heading into the season, but the Angels got off to a slow start and have never really recovered. They’ve struggled to find and maintain any sort of consistency and have been something of an ‘underachiever’ all year long. They’re solid but not dominant at home, and have had a losing record on the road all year. Overall, they’re just above .500 and have cost their financial backers a few units this year after earning sizable profits over the past few seasons.

Minnesota has been decent on the road this year, but they’ve been exceptional at home where they’re neck and neck with the New York Yankees for best home mark in the American League. They’ve managed to hold off the Chicago White Sox who were the hottest team in baseball during July but have slumped somewhat heading into August.

The Angels are scheduled to start recently acquired Dan Haren, who is a solid pitcher that has struggled of late. It was hoped that Haren would fare better after moving from the Arizona Diamondbacks to his new team but his struggles have continued. Haren has a 1-6 record with a 3.97 ERA in his last ten starts. Minnesota will counter with a very underrated pitcher in Brian Duensing. Duensing has transitioned to the starting rotation from the bullpen and performed exceptionally well. He’s made only 5 starts to date, but has a 6-1 record and a 2.00 ERA. In his last start, he pitched a complete game shutout against the Oakland A’s allowing only three hits in the process.

Los Angeles has the talent necessary to contend but have yet to show sufficient resolve to turn the corner and go on an extended winning streak. Just ‘treading water’ won’t get it done if they’re hoping to get back into the AL West race nor will it be sufficient against a Minnesota team that continues to play winning baseball late in the year. Haren is a more recognizable ‘name’ with the general public, which may serve to give us some value on the home team and the more unsung Duensing. Twins have already won 3 of 4 against the Angels this year and we look for them to do at least that well in this series.
