Reds Face Giants In High Stakes National League Series
Reds Face Giants In High Stakes National League SeriesA pair of teams in tight divisional races face off in San Francisco as the Giants host the Cincinnati Reds. Cincinnati is in one of the tightest races in baseball and have been in a virtual dead heat with the St. Louis Cardinals for much of the summer atop the National League Central. In the National League West, the Giants have cooled off from their July form when they were the hottest team in baseball. They’ve continued to play well, but have been unable to pull closer than 3 or 4 games behind the first place San Diego Padres. This is the stretch run of a 9 game West Coast road swing for Cincinnati and could be crucial in determining the postseason fate of both teams.

The Reds have a serviceable pitching staff, but their real strength is their offensive output. They have the best team batting average (.271) and have scored more runs than any team in the National League. San Francisco, on the other hand, is a middle of the pack offensive team ranking 9th in runs scored though are a solid 5th in team batting average (.260). The Giants have one of the best pitching staffs in baseball with the #4 team ERA in the National League (3.49). The Giants and Reds have played four times already this year, with each team winning two.

Right hander Edinson Volquez is slated to start Monday’s game for the Reds, and he’s looking to regain his pitching command following Tommy John surgery. He’s started 6 games this season with a record of 3-1 and a 4.25 ERA. The Giants will counter with righty Matt Cain, who has pitched better than his 9-9 record suggests. Cain has an ERA of 3.11 and in recent games has been the victim of poor relief pitching. In his last start, Cain held the Chicago Cubs to 3 runs over six innings and left the game with a 7-3 lead only to end up getting a ‘no decision’.

The Giants have been a solid home team all season, but the Reds are good on the road. Cincinnati has really done a number on right handed pitching this season, and particularly on the road—as of mid August the Reds had earned a tidy +12 units of profit in away games against right handers. They haven’t hit left handed pitching quite as well and have lost money on the road against southpaws—that’ll be a concern against a couple of the Giants other starters in Barry Zito and Jonathan Sanchez but not in this game.

San Francisco has had bullpen issues all year, and against the hard hitting Reds that could be their undoing. With their impressive year to date performance against right handers it’s hard to pass up Cincinnati in this spot. There’s a good chance that the Reds will be an underdog in all three games at AT&T Park making them an even stronger investment here. We like Cincy to take at least two of three in this series starting with Monday’s game, and we’ll back them against all of the Giants’ right handers at what should be attractive ‘plus money’ prices.
