Pirates Hit The Road To Take On Brewers
Pirates Hit The Road To Take On BrewersBaseball betting season is winding down for 2010, and a couple of teams that won’t be anywhere near postseason play will meet on Friday night in Milwaukee as the Brewers host the Pittsburgh Pirates. With the Baltimore Orioles starting to play better under new manager Buck Showalter they’ve left the Pirates in the dust for the worst record in baseball. Milwaukee hasn’t been quite that bad, but has been right around or just below the .500 mark this season and are well off the pace set by National League Central leaders St. Louis and Cincinnati.

Pittsburgh does have some promising young prospects, and they’ve been working them into the lineup for much of the season. One is the scheduled starter for this game, James McDonald. McDonald, a 25 year old right hander out of Long Beach, California may not have the most impressive ERA or W/L record but the team has been pleased with his progress. He needs to improve his ‘mound generalship’ and become more accurate with his fastball, but has the potential to become a solid Major League starting pitcher.

The Brewers will counter with their own pitching prospect, second year lefthander Chris Narveson. Narveson has a 9-7 record but has benefitted greatly from being on a strong offensive team, as his ERA has been above 5.00 for most of the season. He’s been improving throughout the year, however, and has looked good in recent starts—he’s won two of his last three outings allowing three earned runs in each game.

Overall, the Pirates have been one of the biggest money losers in baseball this year costing bettors well over 20 units. They could be worth a look here, however, as they’ve turned a profit this season against left handed pitchers though most of that has been earned at home. Against southpaws on the road they’re just around break even, but compared to their overall record that’s a definite improvement.

Despite their relative success against lefties, we can’t get past the Pirates’ dismal performance on the road this year. They’ll enter this contest with a pitiful 13-48 record away from PNC Park, which is by far the worst away mark in baseball. Even the lowly Orioles have won 17 games away from home. Of greater concern to the baseball betting enthusiast is the Pirates’ loss of more than 21 units on the road despite being a sizable underdog virtually every time out.

Milwaukee might not be a championship level team, but they’re definitely better than Pittsburgh. The Brewers have been treading water at home all year, but against the worst road team in Major League Baseball we’ll gladly lay the chalk and back Milwaukee to win here.
