A few weeks ago the main storyline for this matchup may have been about two teams fighting for their playoff lives. Now it’s all about Manny Ramirez coming back to Fenway wearing different colored Sox. Manny recently joined the White Sox after being acquired via waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The White Sox are in need of a bat to help out in the struggling designated hitter position and they decided to take a chance on Manny, and the circus that accompanies him. The White Sox will need his help if they are going to catch the Minnesota Twins. The White Sox are locked in a battle with the Twins in the central and sit about three games out of first place. The Wild Card seems destined to go to the second place finisher in the American League East so the White Sox have to win the central if they want to advance to the post season. The White Sox will send John Danks to the hill on Friday night to start against Boston. A week ago the Boston Red Sox had a shot at still making the playoffs, but now the playoffs seem to be unobtainable. The turning point may have been when they lost two out of three games to Tampa Bay in a pivotal series. If the Red Sox won the series they would still be in the race for both the Wild Card and the A.L. East title. Instead they lost two very close games after winning the first game and have thrown in the towel. They are dropping games to lesser opponents like the Orioles, and they are trading players that have had key positions in the past. The Red Sox will start their 15 game winner, Clay Buchholz, against the White Sox. The Red Sox are favorites to win the game on Friday mainly due to Clay Buchholz. He has been one of the best pitchers on this staff and the BoSox can hit left handed pitching. Manny’s return to Boston will motivate some of the players that did not appreciate the way he left, but don’t look for Boston to win the series. The White Sox need this game, and the series to stay competitive in the central, and keep pace with the Twins. Manny loves to play in the moment and a return to Fenway will give him reason to have a good weekend series. The White Sox will win the series in Boston, but the Red Sox should take the game on Friday night. By Matt Regaw
