| Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels |
The Angels are safely nestled in third place and sitting at nine and a half games behind the front running Texas Rangers in the American League West. They are just two games behind the A’s for second place and could finish the year in second if they can string a few wins together. That has not happened as of late as they are just 4-6 in the last ten games. The Seattle Mariners have no hopes of finishing anywhere but last in the A.L. West. They have been a huge disappointment this year with a winning percentage of just 39% and currently are more than 20 games out of first. This does not mean, however that the Mariners don’t have anything to play for in this series. The Mariners need eight wins to avoid losing 100 games. Having a losing season is bad enough, but it seems even worse, when a team ends up with a triple digit number in the loss column. The Mariners also have a player that is about to achieve an historic milestone. Ichiro is proving to baseball historians that he belongs on the list of baseball’s best hitters. He is riding a nine game hitting streak entering the three-game game set against the Angels. Currently he has 181 hits this season and 2,211 in his career and he is quickly approaching 167th place on the list of players with all-time hits. He needs just four more hits to pass Joe DiMaggio on that list. Ichiro will be looking to achieve this mark in the series with the Halo’s. In Friday’s pitching matchup the Mariners will send David Pauley to the hill to face off against Jered Weaver. Pauley has struggled on the year posting a record of two wins and seven losses. He has given up at least four runs in his last four outings and is 0-1 with an earned run average (ERA) of 6.00 in one start against the Angles this year. Weaver has a much better record as he sits at 11-11 on the year. He has had some success against the Mariners on the year posting a perfect 2-0 record with a miniscule ERA of 0.84. The three game series begins on Friday in Los Angeles and will provide some interesting side stories as the season comes to a close. By Matt Regaw
