| Major League Baseball Weekend Series (Friday Oct 1-Oct3rd) |
In game one the Giants will send crafty veteran Barry Zito to the hill. Zito has recorded just one win since July 16 and is 9-13 on the season. The Giants will hope to provide some run support for Zito in game one of the series. Left hander Clayton Richard will oppose Zito and look to get the Padres off to a good start in the series. In game two the Giants will start reliable Matt Cain against the Padres. Cain pitched nine dominant innings, not allowing a hit until the 8th in his last start against Colorado. The Padres will counter with Tim Stauffer as they try to keep it close in the West. Stauffer allowed one run on three hits in six innings in his last start and has an earned run average of just 1.89. This surprising starter may be the difference in keeping the race alive. In game three the Giants will put Jonathan Sanchez and his 200 strikeouts up against the Padres. If this game decides the division don’t be surprised if rumors of Tim Lincecum starting surface. Mat Latos will go for the Padres, but if the division is already clinched by the Giants a new starter may be announced since Latos has already pitched 173 innings on the season. This division is the Giants to lose. They hold a lead coming into this season ending series and all they have to do is win so the pressure sits with the Padres. The Giants strength is their pitching and they rank first in ERA and opposing batting average, and second in quality starts. They rank fifth in the league in WHIP and with a strong rotation they should easily lock up the west and head into the playoffs. Play the Giants to win the National League West By Matthew Regaw
