The Minnesota Twins Look To Take down the upstart Baltimore Orioles
The Minnesota Twins Look To Take down the upstart Baltimore OriolesThe Baltimore Orioles have slowed down after their fast start and the Minnesota Twins will hope to take advantage of the mini-slump.

Minnesota’s Francisco Liriano has pitched like an All-Star through the first three innings of his first three starts. From the fourth inning on, however, he has looked nothing like one of the league’s elite.

Liriano hopes to put another forgettable outing behind him as he takes the ball for the Twins on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series against the slumping Baltimore Orioles.

Liriano (0-3, 9.42 ERA) played a big role on Minnesota’s AL Central-winning team last season, going 14-10 with a 3.62 ERA. The Twins (5-10) are off to a slow start this year, and some of their problems stem from Liriano’s struggles.

Against Kansas City on Wednesday, Liriano was pounded for seven runs and eight hits in five innings of a 10-5 defeat. All of the runs came after the third inning, which continued a disturbing pattern for the left-hander.

The first time through the lineup, opponents are batting .083 against Liriano. Second time through the order, however, Liriano is allowing them to hit .545. He has a 2.00 ERA through the first three innings, but from the fourth inning on, his ERA balloons to 21.94.

Liriano, who has posted an 8.78 ERA in losing six consecutive starts dating back to last season, is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA in two career games against the Orioles.

In addition to Liriano’s troubles, the Twins are also trying to overcome a trip to the disabled list for All-Star catcher Joe Mauer (viral infection) and a shakeup in the closer’s role. Ron Gardenhire has replaced the struggling Joe Nathan with Matt Capps as the team’s closer.

Capps pitched a scoreless ninth inning Sunday against Tampa Bay to earn the save in a 4-2 victory as Minnesota snapped a four-game skid. Nathan had blown saves Thursday and Saturday in games the Twins lost.

The Orioles will get back on the winning track against a Twins team that is pitching horribly.
