Rockies Host World Champion Giants at Coors Field
Rockies Host World Champion Giants at Coors FieldThe Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants are expected to battle all season long for supremacy in the National League West and they currently occupy first and second in the division. So far, however, Colorado has been the dominant team in the West and in something of a switch from their usual ‘M.O.’ it has been their road play that’s been the catalyst of their great start. Colorado is 7-1 on the road so far this season with a 4-2 record at Coors Field.

For years, the Rockies have been a very good home team but have struggled on the road. If they can’t improve their play away from Coors Field they could be in a position to contend for the NL crown. Pitching has historically been a concern for Colorado but they’ve got a solid rotation to work with now led by staff ace Ubaldo Jimenez who’ll get the start here. Jimenez was downright unhittable at several points during the 2010 season finishing with a 19-8 record and a 2.88 ERA.

The Giants will counter with lefthander Jonathan Sanchez who was one of the unsung heroes of the team’s 2010 World Championship run. The big names at the top of the rotation get all of the press but the solid efforts turned in by Sanchez and Matt Cain gave the Giants consistency at the bottom of the rotation. Sanchez is off to a solid start in the 2011 season with a 1-1 record and a 3.24 ERA.

Colorado was very competitive in head to head play with the Giants in 2010—the teams split 18 games and in our view Sanchez is one of the better matchups for the Rockies in the San Francisco rotation. The Rockies lost money against right-handers last season but did fairly well against lefthanders. Jimenez has struggled with a thumb injury in the early going, but assuming his physical problems are healed we expect him to quickly regain his dominating form.

We also expect the Rockies to once again be one of the toughest home teams in Major League Baseball. Not only do they play well on their home field they have the advantage of Denver’s ‘Mile High’ altitude which is always tough for opposing teams to deal with. San Francisco was a good, though not great, road team in 2010 with a 43-38 record away from home. They’re just 4-4 away from AT&T Park so far this season. We’ll take the Rockies bats against southpaw Sanchez and look for them to get a win in Tuesday night’s matchup.
