Sputtering White Sox Face Yankees in the Bronx
Sputtering White Sox Face Yankees in the BronxThe New York Yankees entered the season with some concern over their starting rotation, but three weeks in to the regular season they’re right where they expected they’d be atop the AL East. The White Sox haven’t been as fortunate—they entered the week mired in last place in the AL Central having lost 9 of their last 10 games. Things won’t get any easier for the White Sox as they head to Yankee Stadium for a three game set against the ‘Bronx Bombers’ concluding on Wednesday.

The White return essentially the same lineup as last year and were hoping to avoid the miserable start that left them out of the playoffs despite a torrid 64-41 record from June 9th onward. The only major change is a definite upgrade, as the White Sox signed Adam Dunn in the offseason to give the team a left handed power hitter at the DH position. The only other major transaction in the off season was a pair of contract extensions for veterans Paul Konerko and A.J. Pierzynski. The team lost closer Bobby Jenks and will have to find a replacement, but for now manager Ozzie Guillen has settled on Matt Thornton, though he has options should he struggle.

It’s hard to blame the White Sox for the relative stability in the roster—the only thing they need to do to improve upon last year’s results and make the postseason is to get off to a better start early in the year. Unfortunately, it looks like ‘déjà vu all over again’ as the White Sox have been in horrible form to start the season. This year, however, the team may not get the opportunity to try and make a furious late season run—it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see some changes in Chicago if their struggles continue.

For the Yankees, it’s been business as usual. The starting rotation has been serviceable, if not overwhelming and the offense is as potent as ever. They may not be dominating any one statistical category but they’re doing what it takes to win games which is obviously the most important thing. The Yankees are also taking care of business on their home field, entering this week with a record of 8-3 at Yankee Stadium.

The White Sox will start veteran lefthander Mark Buehrle who—like the rest of the team—has struggled so far with a 1-2 record and a 5.40 ERA. He’ll be opposed by Bartolo Colon who has pitched better than his 1-1 record would suggest with a 3.50 ERA and 20 strikeouts. Until the White Sox show a reversal of their dismal form, we have to go against them and particularly against a team playing as well as the Yankees.
