The Washington Nationals Attempt to Take another game from the Atlanta Braves
The Washington Nationals Attempt to Take another game from the Atlanta BravesThe Washington Nationals may not be one of the best teams in baseball, but they play well against the Braves.

Bothered by a blister on his right foot, Derek Lowe had a feeling that his no-hit bid would come to an end in his last start. The way he’s performed against the Washington Nationals lately, the Atlanta Braves sinkerballer might have other thoughts during this NL East matchup.

Lowe tries to extend his 19 2-3-inning scoreless streak against the Nationals on Thursday night when the Braves look to salvage the finale of this series in Atlanta.

The Braves (20-18), who have dropped three of four following a season-best six-game winning streak, are glad Lowe can go after they blew a 3-1 ninth-inning lead and lost 7-3 in 11 innings Wednesday. Washington (18-18) improved to 4-1 since getting swept by Philadelphia to begin its nine-game trip.

Completing the sweep could be difficult against Lowe, who hasn’t allowed a run while winning his last three starts versus the Nationals. Washington last scored against him in the sixth inning of its 6-2 road win Aug. 19. Lowe struck out six and gave up three hits - all singles - in 5 2-3 innings of a 2-0 season-opening victory in the nation’s capital March 31.

Washington will try to win its fifth in a row in Atlanta as Jordan Zimmermann (2-4, 4.10) makes his first start at Turner Field.

The right-hander walked a season-high three and gave up three runs - two earned - over six innings of a 11-2 home loss to the Braves on April 3.

Striking out Brian McCann could be tough. The Braves catcher is batting .350 (14 for 40) during an 11-game hitting streak after going 2 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs Wednesday.

Zimmermann might get his first look at Eric Hinske with right fielder Jason Heyward likely to miss a second straight game after undergoing an MRI on his sore right shoulder. Hinske is 7 for 13 with three homers and seven RBIs in his last six games.

Nationals outfielder Laynce Nix also is swinging a hot bat, going 4 for 9 with a homer and four RBIs in the first two games of the series. Nix is hitless with two strikeouts in four at-bats against Lowe.

The Nationals are hitting the ball very well at the moment and will continue to own the Braves as they win this game.
