| The Seattle Mariners take on the Surprising Cleveland Indians |
The Cleveland Indians have shot to the top of the AL thanks to the majors’ best home record. They have to like their chances of ending their brief slump at Progressive Field on Friday night. Looking to avoid a season-high third straight home loss, Cleveland opens a weekend series against former manager Eric Wedge and the struggling Seattle Mariners, who were swept by the AL Central leaders last month. This will be Wedge’s first visit to Cleveland since being fired after the 2009 campaign. Wedge was 561-573 over seven seasons with the Indians, guiding them within one win of the 2007 AL pennant. Cleveland, though, squandered a 3-1 lead in the AL championship series and lost to eventual World Series champion Boston. Following a 14-game home winning streak, the Indians (23-13) have dropped two straight after falling 7-4 to Tampa Bay on Thursday. The Indians’ slide could indeed be short. Cleveland swept the Mariners in a three-game set April 8-10 in Seattle behind Asdrubal Cabrera and Orlando Cabrera. Asdrubal was 6 for 14 with two homers and three RBIs, while Orlando was 6 for 10. The Indians are seeking their 15th win in 19 home games, a mark they didn’t reach last season until their 35th home game. Cleveland, which dropped two of three at home to the Mariners last season, will go with Fausto Carmona (3-3, 3.83 ERA) in the series opener. The right-hander didn’t get a decision Sunday in Anaheim, where he allowed three runs - none earned - in seven innings of the Tribe’s 6-5 loss. That’s been especially true in Cleveland. Since giving up 10 runs in three innings to the Chicago White Sox on opening day April 1, Carmona is 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA in three home starts. He didn’t face Seattle last month, and is 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA in three starts versus the Mariners in Cleveland. Doug Fister (2-4, 3.40), who flirted with a dubious club record his last time out, will try to end Seattle’s slide. The Indians keep winning as they take down the struggling Seattle Mariners.
