The New York Mets Try to shake off one of their worse losses against the Chicago Cubs
The New York Mets Try to shake off one of their worse losses against the Chicago CubsThe New York Mets have had problems off the field and they have translated to bad play on the field.

The New York Mets have had very little to feel good about lately, both on and off the field.

In the midst of discouraging comments from owner Fred Wilpon, the Mets will try to put one of their worst losses of the season behind them against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.

New York (22-25) has been in the headlines lately, but not for reasons it would like. Wilpon criticized David Wright, Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran in an interview with The New Yorker, then told Sports Illustrated the club is “bleeding cash” and could lose up to $70 million this year.

Manager Terry Collins held a pregame meeting before Tuesday’s series opener with Chicago, urging his team to focus on its play. The Mets said they got the message, but it sure didn’t look that way in an 11-1 loss.

New York committed a season-high three errors and suffered its most lopsided defeat since an 11-0 loss to Philadelphia on April 7. Jason Bay also left in the seventh inning with a stiff right calf but said he was fine.

It was the third straight loss for the Mets, who have totaled 14 runs in their last seven games.

One of the players Wilpon called out has been in the middle of this slump, as Beltran is batting .214 with one RBI in his last eight games. Reyes had two hits and drove in New York’s lone run Tuesday after going 3 for 17 (.176) in his previous four contests.

While the Mets are sputtering, the Cubs reached the 11-run mark for the third time in 12 games.

Building on this kind of outburst, however, has proven to be difficult for Chicago (21-25).

The Cubs, winners of four of six, have scored eight or more runs seven times, winning all of those contests. They followed each of those first six games with a loss, combining for 10 runs.

Chicago’s double-play tandem of Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney led the offense Tuesday, as the two combined for five hits and four RBIs. Castro had his major league-leading 10th three-hit game. Castro and his teammates will be getting their first look at Dillon Gee (3-0, 3.44 ERA), who’s making his first career appearance against Chicago.

The result will be the same as the Mets continue to struggle.
