MLB Betting Series Preview: New York Yankees vs. Oakland Athletics

The New York Yankees will continue their west coast trip over the holiday weekend as they head up the bay to tangles with the Athletic A’s. Despite playing on the road the latest MLB odds have the Yankees favored to win the series.

In game one of the series it will be Bartolo Colon toeing the rubber against Trevor Cahill.

Against the Blue Jays, Colon pitched five strong innings but faltered in the sixth. A five-run explosion, fueled by three walks -- two intentional -- led to his third loss of the season. He struck out eight in defeat but walked four overall.

Cahill wasn't at his best in his last start, giving up back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning to the Angels. He lasted six innings, scattered 10 hits and five walks while being tagged for four runs (three earned) and just his second loss. Cahill however is still off to one of his best starts of his career.

The Yankees have had their share of west coast woes over the years, but they are coming off a fine week and should fare well at McAfee Coliseum. They’ve averaged 5.5 runs per game vs. righties, while the Athletics have floundered in that spot. The Yankees have had less road games than any other team in the major leagues and after losing the series in Seattle the Yankees will be eager to get back on the winning track and take another series.

The rest of the pitching rotation will feature Freddy Garcia against Brett Anderson in game two and A.J. Burnett against Gio Gonzalez in game three. The pitching will be needed for the Yankees, because the Oakland A’s are riding a winning streak as they head into this series.

The head-to-head sports betting trends favor the Yankees and the under in this series. The Yankees are 7-1 in the last 8 meetings in Oakland and 40-18 in the last 58 meetings overall. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Oakland and the pitching should dominate this series again.

Oakland is pitching too well to pass them up as a home underdog in this series. The A’s will take at least two games against the Yankees in this series to pay off backers.
