MLB Betting Series Preview: Philadelphia Phillies vs. Washington Nationals

The holiday Monday is a great way to start the week and several great baseball matchups also get underway. One of the better teams playing early baseball on Memorial Days is the Philadelphia Phillies as they start a series against the Washington Nationals.

In the first game Roy Halladay will start for Philadelphia and he will go up against Livan Hernandez for the Washington Nationals.

Halladay is 4-2 with a 2.10 ERA in his past seven starts. He is 5-0 with a 1.15 ERA in five starts against Washington since joining the Phillies and is 10-1 with a 2.01 ERA in 14 career appearances against the Nationals/Expos in his career.

Hernandez finally got some run support in his last start, but the bullpen faltered. He lost a chance at victory when Tyler Clippard and Henry Rodriguez each gave up two runs late in a 7-6 loss at Milwaukee.

The Phillies have dominated the Nationals in head to head play winning five out of the last six games and their pitching staff is living up to all expectations with a 3.01 ERA which is best in the league. But their continued struggles at the plate are great cause for concern as they average about 2.0 runs per game. The good news is the Phillies will have Chase Utley back in the lineup and this lineup should be much more efficient.

The rest of the pitching rotation for this series will favor the Phillies, but it always seems to with as well as they are playing. On Tuesday Cliff Lee will go up against Jason Marquis and in the third game on Wednesday look for Roy Oswalt against John Lannan.

The series betting trends for this matchup are in favor of the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies are 5-0 in Halladays last 5 starts against the Nationals, 5-2 in the last 7 meetings in Washington, and 43-13 in the last 56 meetings.

The total has one trend in head-to-head meetings that favor the over. The over is 19-6-1 in the last 26 meetings in Washington. The over may be hard to achieve with the quality of pitching that is on deck for the opener in this series, but look for it to be a profitable play in other games of this series.

Overall unless they have a serious outage at the plate, the Phillies should take care of the Nationals in this series.
