Cole Hamels has been among the best pitchers in baseball this year, but the Marlins have given him fits in the past.

They'll renew acquaintances on Tuesday in the opener of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Chris Volstad is scheduled to start for the Marlins, and he is just looking for better luck.

Hamels is third in the National League with a 2.58 ERA. He is fifth in the circuit with 91 strikeouts, and he is tied for second with eight wins.

Hamels attributes his latest leap to the addition of a cut fastball and curveball to his repertoire.

"I'm completely different," he said. "I don't even know how I did so well back then. Seriously. I think being able to throw four pitches is a lot easier than two."

Still, Hamels is 4-7 in his career against the Marlins with a 3.65 ERA. He held Florida to two runs in seven innings when he faced them on April 17, a game the Phillies won, 3-2. Hamels' most recent outing was stellar -- he threw eight shutout innings against the Dodgers, also a Phillies win.

Volstad has lowered his ERA by nearly a half point over his past two starts, pitching into the seventh inning in both but suffering two losses. His most recent appearance lasted 6 2/3 innings against the Braves, and he allowed three runs on three hits. Despite taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning, however, his personal losing streak was stretched to six games in a 3-2 defeat.

Volstad is 2-3 in 10 career starts against the Phillies with a 4.45 ERA. The last time he faced Philadelphia, he allowed five runs in five innings last September.

The Phillies are 16-7 against the Marlins over the past two seasons.

Hanley Ramirez will take batting practice before Monday's game and will be scheduled to travel to Philadelphia for the series against the Phillies.

Ramirez's return has not been confirmed for the opener against the Phillies, but his manager, Edwin Rodriguez, hinted that he wants to deploy the All-Star shortstop as the leadoff hitter against Hamels.

"He was a little bit sore, but he should be all right," Rodriguez said after Ramirez played in a rehab game on Saturday. "We need that offense."

Ramirez said he's ready to be back.

"Fifteen days without being on the field doesn't feel good," said Ramirez, who hasn't played with the Marlins since May 29. "It doesn't feel right."

With Hanley in the lineup, the Marlins are a different team and they will get a win to start this series with him in the lineup.
