| Two hot pitchers do battle when the Tampa Bay Rays play against the Houston Astros |
Betting baseball will make the long season more exciting and there is no place better to wager on major league baseball than BetPhoenix. Online sportsbook BetPhoenix has the latest odds and wagering opportunities on every game in baseball. James Shields has been one of the best pitchers in baseball with a major league-leading five complete games, two of them coming in his last two starts. His opponent on the mound Friday night hasn’t been too bad, either. Shields will face off with a streaking Wandy Rodriguez as the Tampa Bay Rays open a three-game road set with the lowly Houston Astros. Both starters have not allowed an earned run in their last two outings. Shields (7-4, 2.40 ERA) went the distance both times while Rodriguez (5-3, 2.88) has turned in back-to-back scoreless six-inning stints. Shields, who has never faced the Astros, struck out 10 and walked none in a four-hitter to beat Florida 2-1 on Sunday. “If that does not put him in the All-Star game, I don’t know what does,” manager Joe Maddon said. “Five complete games prior to the All-Star game, that does not happen every year. And it’s the way he’s done it, too. He’s just been dominating.” The right-hander is tied for second in the AL with 108 strikeouts and opponents are batting .214 against him. “It’s one of the things that I’ve strived for is to be able to make an All-Star team in my career,” Shields told the Rays’ official website. “And if that happens, I think that I’d definitely be happy about it.” Rodriguez is making a bid to join the NL squad. He hasn’t lost since April 24, going 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA in his last seven starts. His last two outings came after a stint on the disabled list due to fluid in his elbow joint. He scattered seven hits in a 7-0 road victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday to win his third straight start. “I feel very good,” Rodriguez said. “Every time I go out there I try to make quality pitches, and that’s what I’m doing right now.” The left-hander is 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two starts against Tampa Bay (41-34). Houston (28-48) has dropped five straight interleague home games. The Astros, who finished with a split of their six-game trip after losing two of three to Texas, have gone 2-11 in their last 13 at Minute Maid Park. Hunter Pence is expected back in the lineup after missing the last five games with a sprained left elbow. Pence leads the Astros with a .321 average, nine homers and 51 RBIs. This is the first time that the Rays are visiting an NL team other than Florida for the second straight year. Tampa Bay took two of three at Houston last season after losing five of the previous six meetings. Ben Zobrist went 7 for 13 with a homer and three RBIs in the 2010 series. While Zobrist is struggling with a .226 average in interleague play this year, Casey Kotchman has excelled against the NL with a .400 average and four RBIs. The Rays beat Milwaukee 6-3 on Wednesday to take two of three. Their starters have gone 6-2 with a 2.18 ERA in nine interleague contests. Look for a low scoring game with two great pitchers on the hill and take the under in this game.
