The New York Yankees Battle the Milwaukee Brewers in Interleague Play
The New York Yankees Battle the Milwaukee Brewers in Interleague PlayThe New York Yankees are having a great time winning ballgames in interleague play, but the Milwaukee Brewers may provide their stiffest challenge yet.

A veteran lineup continues to produce for New York Yankees, who have a slim lead in the AL East.

The Milwaukee Brewers have opened a slightly larger advantage in the NL Central thanks to their young stars.

The two division leaders open a three-game series Tuesday night, facing off in the Bronx for the first time in 14 years.

New York (45-31) owns a one-half game lead over Boston for both the top spot in the East and the AL’s best record. The Yankees closed a three-game weekend series against Colorado with back-to-back wins, including a 6-4 victory Sunday, and have won 12 of 16.

They’ll face a Brewers team that, despite recent inconsistency, still leads St. Louis by three games. Milwaukee (44-35) swept Minnesota in three games over the weekend after losing seven of its previous 10.

“It means we’re in the position we wanted to be in,” Brewers slugger Ryan Braun said. “But ultimately it matters where we’re at on Sept. 26 not June 26.”

While the Brewers come to New York with some momentum, cooling off the Yankees at home will be tough. New York has scored six or more runs in eight of its last 10 home games.

The first 13 Yankee hitters failed to reach base Sunday, but the offense woke up thereafter. Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Jorge Posada had a solo shot.

“It was a great day overall,” manager Joe Girardi said.

Alex Rodriguez continues to show little sign of being slowed by the pain in his right knee. He had six RBIs in the Colorado series and has driven in at least one run in each of his last six games. He’s 13 for 26 in his last seven contests.

Milwaukee is also hitting well, but is back on the road after completing a 4-2 homestand. The Brewers are 15-24 away from home - the worst mark in the majors for any team with a winning overall record.

Milwaukee outscored the Twins 21-6 over the weekend. Braun had one hit in each contest including a two-run homer Sunday to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Prince Fielder had five RBIs in the series, and has a hit in nine straight games.

The Brewers will send Zack Greinke (7-2, 4.77 ERA) to the mound Tuesday for the former Kansas City Royal’s first appearance against the Yankees since 2008.

Greinke held Tampa Bay to one run and four hits in seven innings of a 5-1 victory on Tuesday. The right-hander struck out 10 for a second straight game.

Greinke is 2-3 with a 4.38 ERA in seven career starts against the Yankees.

Mark Teixeira, who has homered in his last two games, is 5 for 11 with two doubles and a home run against Greinke while Swisher is 6 for 15 with a homer.

Yankees starter Freddy Garcia (6-6, 3.30) will seek another strong start against the NL.

Garcia is 1-2 in three interleague outings this year, but has gone seven innings in each of them, compiling a 2.14 ERA. He gave up two unearned runs in a 4-2 win at Cincinnati on Wednesday.

The right-hander has lost both of his career starts against the Brewers, but hasn’t faced them since 2007.

This is the Brewers’ first visit to the Bronx since 1997, when they were still part of the AL. They have a seven-game road losing streak against the Yankees.

Milwaukee won two of three against the Yankees at home in 2005. They get going in the right direction again with a victory against the pinstripes in game one of this series.
