| The Minnesota Twins and KC Royals Get Things Started in the second half of the MLB Season |
Betting baseball will make the long season more exciting and there is no place better to wager on major league baseball than BetPhoenix. Online sportsbook BetPhoenix has the latest odds and wagering opportunities on every game in baseball. To say this season didn't start like the Twins expected it to would be an understatement. The club fell 20 games under the .500 mark in May, but has since clawed its way out of the American League Central cellar. Winners of seven of their last 10 before the All-Star break, the Twins aim to continue their recent string of success when they open the second half with a four-game home series against the division-rival Royals. "It's been a battle from injuries and ups and downs," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We've been on some good runs as of late and have played a lot better baseball this month. We're fighting our way back to .500. Considering where we are, it's been kind of an amazing run to be as close to .500 as we are." As they near the .500 mark, and with their next 12 games against AL Central opponents, the Twins hope to contend for the division, which has been decided by one game two of the last three seasons. "All we can do is hope," Gardenhire said. "You never can predict what will happen. One team can go on a run and get away from everybody. You just don't know. The good thing about the start of the second half is that we're playing a lot of teams within our division. So, we'll have our opportunities to get closer. That's for sure." But standing in the Twins' way to start the second half is Royals hurler Bruce Chen, who will get the nod for Kansas City in the series opener. Earlier in the season, Chen tossed 5 1/3 innings of three-run ball against Minnesota en route to a 4-3 win for the Royals on April 29. And if the Royals hope to climb out of the cellar like the Twins did, and wish to vie for the division in the second half, it begins with Chen on Thursday. Francisco Liriano will toe the rubber for the Twins to begin a 12-game stretch of AL Central games. In his last start before the break, Liriano struggled with his mechanics, surrendering five runs in 4 1/3 innings while walking four and plunking three. "I was all over the place," Liriano said. "I think I was overthrowing, too. I was trying to be too perfect going to the plate. Sometimes when I try to throw too hard, I miss my spots." The Twins lead the season series with the Royals, 5-4. The clubs split their only two meetings this year at Target Field. The Twins seem to be carrying a bit of momentum heading into this game and will start the second half with a victory.
