The Milwaukee Brewers Look To Gain Momentum in the Second Half at Colorado
The Milwaukee Brewers Look To Gain Momentum in the Second Half at ColoradoThe Milwaukee Brewers had the MVP of the All-Star game and made a blockbuster trade. Now they need to win.

Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has made some bold moves during his tenure, among them his latest trade for reliever Francisco Rodriguez.

The Brewers’ bolstered bullpen may not have to work too hard in its first game after the All-Star break, given Yovani Gallardo’s recent string of quality starts.

Gallardo takes the mound Thursday night when the Brewers visit the Colorado Rockies to open a four-game set and the season’s second half.

Not long after Prince Fielder won All-Star game MVP honors for his three-run homer which helped the NL to a 5-1 victory Tuesday, Milwaukee (49-43) acquired Rodriguez from the New York Mets in exchange for cash and two players to be named later.

Rodriguez had 23 saves in 26 chances with the Mets, though his role in Milwaukee yet to be determined with current closer John Axford pitching well. Axford is 23 for 25 in save chances and has a 2.83 ERA.

Melvin traded for starters Shaun Marcum and Zack Greinke during the offseason, and his latest shrewd move seems to prove he’s out to make a run at the playoffs at all costs - especially with Fielder entering free agency following the season.

Milwaukee has won four of its last five games and is tied with St. Louis for the NL Central lead.

“If we got a shot we know (Melvin) is going to do something to get that extra push,” Fielder said. “If we play hard and we have a shot, he is going to do everything he can.” Gallardo (10-5, 3.76 ERA) hopes to keep his new-look bullpen rested.

The right-hander has pitched seven innings in each of his last three starts, going 2-1 with a 2.14 ERA after allowing one run in a victory over Arizona on July 6. He threw 123 pitches, his most since a career-high 126 on May 25, 2009.

Gallardo hasn’t had much success against the Rockies, going 0-3 with a 6.83 ERA in five starts - all Brewers losses.

Milwaukee did sweep a three-game series May 20-22 against Colorado (43-48), but that took place at Miller Park. The outcome may be different on the road, where the Brewers are 16-29 on the season and have dropped eight of 10. Colorado has also won 14 of the last 18 meetings with the Brewers at Coors Field.

Rockies probable starter Ubaldo Jimenez (4-8, 4.14) took the loss in the finale of the May series in Milwaukee despite throwing eight strong innings, limiting the Brewers to three runs - two earned - and two hits in a 3-2 defeat.

The loss was part of a disappointing start to the season for Jimenez, who went 0-5 with a 5.86 ERA in his first nine outings. The right-hander has gone 4-3 with a 2.52 ERA in eight starts since, allowing two earned runs or fewer in six of them.

Jimenez allowed one run through eight innings of a 2-1 victory over Washington on July 9 in his last start before the All-Star break.

“It’s really good when you finish on a high note,” Jimenez said. “Especially with the kind of beginning I had, I struggled a lot, and to finish in this way is going to help me a lot for the second half. Not only me, but the whole team.”

As a team, the Rockies didn’t finish the first half on a high note. They lost six of their last eight games and totaled 13 runs in their last seven. Troy Tulowitzki, the team’s lone All-Star, is hitting .194 since June 28.

Both teams are battling injuries as play resumes. Ryan Braun has missed Milwaukee’s last eight games plus the All-Star game with a calf strain but is expected to return Thursday. Colorado slugger Carlos Gonzalez has a deep bruise in his right wrist. His status is uncertain.

The Brewers are steadily becoming one of the best teams in the National League and will show in this series.
