The LA Dodgers Look To Make up Ground When they play the Colorado Rockies
The LA Dodgers Look To Make up Ground When they play the Colorado RockiesThe Los Angeles Dodgers have strung together some wins to move out of last place in the NL West, but they still face a massive deficit in the division race.

The Colorado Rockies’ poor pitching has them facing a similar road to the top of the West standings.

Los Angeles goes for its third straight win Monday night at Dodger Stadium in the series opener against Colorado.

Although the Dodgers (45-56) have overtaken San Diego and are within 2 1/2 games of the Rockies (48-54) for third, manager Don Mattingly told the team’s official website following Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Washington that his club is “struggling for air and pretty much feels like we’ve got to win every day.”

Winning three of four is a nice start, but the Dodgers - 13 1/2 back of West-leading San Francisco - need more run production. Replacing hitting coach Jeff Pentland with his assistant Dave Hansen on Wednesday was supposed to spark the light-hitting Dodgers, but the club is batting .218 and averaging 3.3 runs in four games since that switch.

The Dodgers, though, had two of their best offensive games the last time these teams met, totaling 21 runs and 35 hits on June 11-12 to split a four-game set in Denver.

Los Angeles, batting .297 and averaging 5.9 runs while losing five of nine in this matchup in 2011, is not the only team scoring in bunches off Rockies pitching. Colorado’s starters have a 5.48 ERA in 11 games since the All-Star break after Ubaldo Jimenez was tagged for five runs in Sunday’s 7-0 loss at Arizona.

However, Monday’s scheduled starter Juan Nicasio (4-2, 3.88 ERA) has been surprisingly good since getting called up May 28. The rookie right-hander allowed one run in seven strong innings of Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Atlanta.

“Compare his consistency versus three others guys (Jason Hammel, Aaron Cook, Jhoulys Chacin), with whom you wonder start-to-start what you’re going to get,” manager Jim Tracy told the Rockies’ official website. “All of a sudden, everyone is looking forward to Juan Nicasio’s starts.”

Nicasio, though, is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in four starts outside Denver. He’ll pitch his first game at Chavez Ravine after giving up four runs in five innings of a 9-7 home win over the Dodgers on June 9.

Los Angeles counters with rookie Rubby De La Rosa (3-4, 3.73), who is 0-3 with a 4.94 ERA in four home starts.

He did not earn a decision in Tuesday’s 5-3 loss at the Giants, allowing three runs and a season high-tying nine hits.

“… He hung in there but made a lot of pitches (88) for five innings,” Mattingly said of De La Rosa, who beat Colorado on June 12 for his most recent win. “It’s going to get better and better.”

It can’t get much better for the Dodgers’ bullpen, which owns a 1.82 ERA over the last 13 games.

Matt Kemp, 2 for 3 with a homer off Nicasio, has four homers and 11 RBIs in this matchup in 2011.

Troy Tulowitzki, batting .405 (15 for 37) with team highs of four homers and 12 RBIs against Los Angeles this season, is 19 for 41 during a 10-game hitting streak in this matchup.

The Dodgers have won six of seven at home while Colorado has dropped 10 of 13 road game and that will open the door for a win by LA.
