| The Kansas City Royals Look To Slow Down the Boston Red Sox |
The Red Sox (62-37) entered Sunday’s finale against Seattle with a major league-leading 529 runs - 23 more than second-place Texas and the New York Rangers - and didn’t waste any time adding to that total. Boston scored five in the first inning and five more in the fifth on its way to a 12-8 victory, its fourth straight and 17th in 20 games since June 30. The Red Sox have scored 10 or more runs 14 times, all in a 56-game stretch since May 20. No other team has reached double digits more than seven times in that span. “Production, one through nine, is what we need,” said catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who had three hits and four RBIs Sunday, “and that’s what we’ve got.” There’s a good chance Boston won’t need to provide Lester (10-4, 3.31 ERA) much support as it seeks its first 10-game winning streak at Fenway since Aug. 28-Sept. 16, 2009. The left-hander has surrendered a total of one run and nine hits over 32 innings in four starts - all victories - versus Kansas City (42-59). Two of those wins came by 1-0 scores, though Boston gave him seven runs during his no-hitter May 19, 2008. Lester didn’t give up a hit through four innings July 5 against Toronto, but he exited with a strained shoulder muscle that led to his stint on the disabled list. He threw a bullpen session Wednesday that manager Terry Francona called “tremendous” and is ready to go Monday - though Francona cautioned he won’t throw more than 80 to 90 pitches. “That’s not shorting him too much,” Francona told the team’s official website of Lester, who’s 1-2 with a 5.70 ERA in his last four home starts. “That might be shorting him an inning.” The Royals had a chance to come into Boston riding a season-high five-game winning streak, but for the fourth time this season, they couldn’t get past four in a row. Tampa Bay held Kansas City to seven hits - six singles - in a 5-0 win Sunday at Kauffman Stadium. “We just didn’t come to play today,” left fielder Alex Gordon said. “I don’t say this a lot, but we deserved to lose.” The Royals, who have yet to meet Boston this season, has lost five of its last seven at Fenway, including three shutouts and a 7-1 loss. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Boston’s offense hit double digits again with Kyle Davies (1-9, 7.32) on the hill for Kansas City. The right-hander has lost all eight starts since April 23, the first Royals pitcher to do so since Brian Anderson lost nine straight as a starter April 25-July 17, 2004. Davies has been especially bad on the road this season, posting a 9.35 ERA, but he’s 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in two career starts at Fenway. Marco Scutaro is an outstanding 7 for 13 with two homers off Davies, but Dustin Pedroia may have a bit of a challenge extending his career-best 21-game hitting streak. Boston’s second baseman is 0 for 5 versus Davies. The Red Sox are hammering pitching and the Royals don’t have a shot. MLB Picks: Boston Red Sox Bet MLB all season long at BetPhoenix.
