The Red Sox Head West To Play the Seattle Mariners
The Red Sox Head West To Play the Seattle Mariners

The Boston Red Sox are playing great baseball and look for some more success against the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners' youth movement is firmly under way.

On Wednesday, Seattle started five rookie position players -- first baseman Mike Carp, second baseman Dustin Ackley, third baseman Kyle Seager, left fielder Trayvon Robinson and right fielder Casper Wells -- for the second time in four games. The Mariners hadn't done that since Aug. 18, 1993, excluding the September/October expanded-roster period.

"We're all learning on the job," Seager said. "Once you get up here, you can't practice the feelings you're going to have when you get out there for the first time. Once the initial shock gets over with, and you can just settle down and play."

Though growing pains are expected with an inexperienced lineup, Seattle's young players have been pulling their weight, as the Mariners are 7-6 since ending their franchise-record 17-game losing streak on July 27.

The Mariners will turn to another rookie, right-hander Blake Beavan, to start against the veteran-heavy Red Sox lineup in the series opener on Friday. Beavan hasn't looked inexperienced in his first season with the Mariners, as he is the first pitcher in franchise history to open his career with six consecutive quality starts.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Red Sox will counter with the 10-year veteran John Lackey, whose second season in Boston has been an inconsistent one. But the right-hander has pitched well against the Mariners, surrendering a combined three runs in 13 innings (two starts) against them.

Lackey earned a win over the Yankees his last time out, on Saturday, yielding three runs over six innings.

Lackey pitches better against a young Mariners team and get the win for the Red Sox.
