A little controversy never hurt anyone, or so the Yankees hope.

Two of their pitchers have dealt with less than ideal circumstances in their previous starts, and it remains to be seen how each will handle it.

Bartolo Colon will get a chance on Tuesday to rebound from his last start, in which the Royals' Billy Butler was erroneously awarded a home run after the ball hit off a chain link fence above the padded wall at Kaufmann Stadium. Major League Baseball acknowledged that the umpires missed the call despite using video replay. It proved costly in the Yankees' 5-4 loss to the Royals.

It was Colon's first loss since July 19. He allowed five runs in five innings and has a 5.13 ERA over his last eight starts.

The Yankees need to get past the current problems. It won't be known until the end of the week how A.J. Burnett will respond after manager Joe Girardi pulled him after allowing seven earned runs over 1 2/3 innings on Saturday at Minnesota.

One thing is clear: Girardi doesn't want to talk about an apparent rift between him and Burnett anymore, after he said on Sunday that there was no ill will behind the decision. He added that Burnett needs a strong bounce-back start on Friday against the Orioles.

The A's begin a 10-game, three-city road trip on Tuesday at Yankee Stadium with Brandon McCarthy on the mound. Two starts ago, he was drilled in the knee by a line drive in the fourth inning of a 9-1 loss to Texas, but made his next start, getting the win in a 6-5 victory over Baltimore.

Entering Tuesday's game against the Yankees, Josh Willingham had blasted nine home runs in his previous 22 games. And he has hit 11 home runs since the All-Star break, tied for most in the American League with Boston's Jacoby Ellsbury.

The Yankees may be having problems but they will still be able to beat the Athletics in this game.
