MLB Pitching matchups for Wednesday August 31st
MLB Pitching matchups for Wednesday August 31stThe Major League Baseball season is entering its last month and teams are attempting to get into the playoffs. With that in mind, every game is important as the season winds down. On Wednesday there are plenty of great pitching matchups that could decide the fate of teams trying to get into the playoffs.
Online sportsbook BetPhoenix has all of the latest sportsbetting odds on every game on the MLB schedule. Here is a look at three of the best pitching matchups for Wednesday.

Oakland Athletics vs. Cleveland Indians

The Indians are in the playoffs race. Ubaldo Jimenez will make his third start at Progressive Field for the Indians. In two home outings, he's 2-0 with a 0.60 ERA. In three road starts, however, the right-hander has allowed 17 earned runs in 13 innings.

Rich Harden was handed a six-run lead in the Bronx, but he allowed six runs on 10 hits in Thursday's no-decision vs. the Yankees, fanning six over 4 1/3 innings. It followed his best start of the season -- seven scoreless innings in a win over Toronto.

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

The Yankees and the Red Sox are in a battle for first place. Phil Hughes took a step back in his last start, lasting just 2 2/3 innings and allowing six runs to the A's before the bats bailed him out in a 22-9 win. Hughes made it just two innings in an April 8 start at Fenway Park, allowing six runs and seven hits.

Josh Beckett struck out four Rangers and gave up four hits in earning his 11th win of the season Wednesday. Beckett is 13-7 with a 5.37 ERA against the Yankees.

LA Angels vs. Seattle Mariners

The LA Angels are trying to cling to their playoff chances. One of the game's most consistent starters, Dan Haren is coming off one of his least effective performances of the year. He coughed up seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings at Texas on Friday, struggling with his command.

He will face off against Felix Hernandez. The Seattle ace received some rare offensive support last Wednesday at Cleveland, and matched the runs with good pitching, going six innings and giving up two runs while striking out 10 for his 12th win.

This will be an exciting time of year as teams try and claim their spot in the MLB 2011 post season.
