MLB Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees
MLB Preview: Tampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees

The baseball season is almost over, but there are a few teams still battling for the playoffs. Two of those teams will meet on Tuesday. The Rays and Yankees have played 11 times this year, but Tampa Bay pitcher Wade Davis has yet to face New York.

It is quite rare for a pitcher to go this long without pitching against a division opponent. Davis pitched against the Yankees four times last year and will face them for the first time in almost a calendar year as the teams begin a four-game series at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday.

"I've done pretty good against the Yankees," Davis said. "I've always had a decent feel for them. I mean, I know they're good, so you have to show up. They're going to work the count and hit mistakes. So if you can limit both of those and minimize the walks, you have a better chance."

Davis has a 2.25 ERA in two career starts at Yankee Stadium and a 3.81 ERA against the Yanks overall. As the Rays fight for their playoff lives and the Yankees battle for a division crown, this series will go a long way to determining each team's fate.

Nova’s given up seven runs and he's given up no runs and still earned wins in both starts. Starter Ivan Nova has won 11 straight decisions and hasn't lost since June 3. However, he has two no-decisions in his last two starts.

"You've got to fight, especially when you know your opposing pitcher is doing a good job and you can't get hits," Nova said after his last start. "You need to keep it as close as you can."

Entering Monday, Mariano Rivera remained at 601 career saves, tied for first with Trevor Hoffman. Manager Joe Maddon said Sunday that Kelly Shoppach will be seeing more time behind the plate down the stretch. Shoppach had thrown out 15 of 37 attemped base stealers this year.

The Yankees are 6-5 against the Rays this season, including a 3-2 record at home. The Rays have won 24 in a row when scoring at least five runs. This game could come down to the hitting and if the Rays want to stay in the hunt for a playoff spot then they need to get to the Yankee’s pitching.
