San Francisco Giants Cling To Postseason hopes against the Dodgers
San Francisco Giants Cling To Postseason hopes against the Dodgers

The Giants know that making the playoffs and repeating as champs are slim, but they need to beat the Dodgers if they have any hope. San Francisco attempts to boost its slim playoff hopes by avoiding a fifth loss in six games to the Dodgers on Wednesday night.

The Giants (83-71) are 4 1/2 games back of NL wild card-leading Atlanta with eight games left in the regular season. The MLB Odds for this game and all of the other great baseball betting matchups can be found at BetPhoenix.

They’re also 5 1/2 behind Arizona for first in the division, and will visit the Diamondbacks for a three-game series this weekend.

San Francisco’s tenuous position in those races hasn’t been helped by losing four of five the Dodgers (77-76) while hitting .178 and getting outscored 8-2 in those defeats.

The Giants had an eight-game win streak snapped with Tuesday’s 2-1 loss, as Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw limited San Francisco to six hits en route to his 20th victory.

Things may not get much easier against Dana Eveland (2-1, 2.25 ERA), who dominated them Sept. 10, allowing three hits in seven innings of a 3-0 win while outpitching Ryan Vogelsong - Wednesday’s scheduled starter.

Eveland is 3-0 with a 0.84 ERA in four games - three starts - against San Francisco, but is coming off a defeat in his most recent trip to the mound Thursday. The left-hander allowed four runs and eight hits in five innings of a 6-2 home loss to Pittsburgh.

Vogelsong’s loss opposite Eveland earlier this month was his fifth losing start in a row, but he ended that skid with Thursday’s 8-5 victory at Colorado. The right-hander was spotted a five-run lead after two innings and yielded two runs and four hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in 5 1-3. He added two hits and two runs of his own.

Vogelsong (11-7, 2.68) was much more effective in his only other season meeting with Los Angeles on July 18, scattering seven hits in 6 2-3 innings of a 5-0 win.

He’s making his first appearance at Dodger Stadium since a relief outing with the Pirates on Sept. 25, 2005.

Vogelsong will have to deal with a red-hot Matt Kemp, who is 9 for 16 with one homer and three RBIs during the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak.

The center fielder, a contender for NL MVP, has a .391 average with two homers and four RBIs in seven home meetings with the Giants this year.

The Giants need to win every game if they hope to make the playoffs and it all starts tonight with the Dodgers.
