NBA Legends Jordan And Barkley React To Lebron’s Miami Move
NBA Legends Jordan And Barkley React To Lebron’s Miami MoveAs arguably the greatest player in NBA history and winner of six championships, Michael Jordan’s opinion still carries a lot of weight. When asked recently about LeBron James’ much ballyhooed free agent signing with the Miami Heat, Jordan didn’t mince words suggesting that both the decision and much of the ‘drama’ that accompanied it was emblematic of a new—and ultimately less competitive—era of NBA players.

Jordan reacted to the LeBron to Miami situation, as well as the so called ‘free agent summit’ that preceded it, after a celebrity golf tournament in Nevada:

"There's no way, with hindsight, I would've ever called up Larry, called up Magic and said, 'Hey, look, let's get together and play on one team. But that's ... things are different. I can't say that's a bad thing. It's an opportunity these kids have today. In all honesty, I was trying to beat those guys."

His ‘comeback’ with the Washington Wizards notwithstanding, Jordan played his entire career with the Bulls in Chicago. For all of his fame and nonstop media coverage, Jordan was all business on the court and earned a reputation as one of the fiercest competitors in sports history. During his tenure in Chicago there was no doubt it was ‘his’ team, and there was never any indication that he would have considered playing elsewhere.

Jordan contemporary Charles Barkley suggested that James’ free agent move and histrionics surrounding it could negatively impact his legacy:

"He'll never be Jordan. This clearly takes him out of the conversation. He can win as much as he wants to.”

"There would have been something honorable about staying in Cleveland and trying to win it as 'The Man' ... LeBron if he would've in Cleveland, and if he could've got a championship there, it would have been over the top for his legacy, just one in Cleveland. No matter how many he wins in Miami, it clearly is Dwyane Wade's team."

For now, the triumvirate of free agent acquisition LeBron James and Chris Bosh along with Dwyane Wade has made Miami the preseason favorite to dethrone the reigning NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron has plenty of quality years left in his career but he needs to get started if he hopes to be in the same conversation as Jordan and his six career NBA championships.
