NBA Midwest Melee As Bulls Host Pacers
NBA Midwest Melee As Bulls Host PacersThis game is a matchup between the first and second place teams in the NBA's Central Division, but the reality isn't quite as dramatic as that suggests. The Chicago Bulls are running away with the division and are the only team in the Central with a winning record. They've already opened up a double digit lead over Indiana, Milwaukee and Detroit with hapless Cleveland over 20 games out of first place. The Bulls have one of the best home court records in the NBA and are a perfect 10-0 against their divisional rivals this season.

Even with Carlos Boozer out of action for much of the season with one of his annual injuries, the Bulls have been dominant on both ends of the court. They have a variety of scoring options, but their biggest weapon has been a suffocating team defense that has ranked among the league's best all season. The Bulls entered the week with a 21-4 record on their home court and an impressive consistency overall—Chicago hasn't lost more than two games in a row all season.

Realistically, every other team in the Central Division with the exception of the Bulls is heading in the wrong direction. The Pacers have a talented scoring option in Danny Granger and very little else. As of January 26 they'd lost 8 of 10 but hadn’t lost any ground in the division as third place Milwaukee had lost 7 of 10. They've been particularly ineffective on the road with a 6-15 record away from home. They entered the week on a dismal pointspread run of 4-8-1 ATS as a visitor. Statistically, they're a middle of the pack team on both ends of the court ranking #16 in scoring defense and #19 in scoring offense.

Obviously the Bulls are a far superior team which is why they'll be decent sized favorites in this matchup. Chicago hasn't been quite as good against the pointspread as they have been straight up, but they've been fairly consistent and by the same token aren't especially bad against the number. There’s always a concern about laying a big margin with the Bulls, however, simply because of the way they’re constructed—they're a team that wins with defense and while that’s a good way to be successful in the NBA it doesn't always translate into pointspread covers.

In this specific matchup, however, there's not much reason to recommend a struggling Pacers team that's been even worse on the road. Indiana could be feeling some fatigue due to a stretch of five games in eight days and this could make their task against the Bulls' feisty defense even more difficult. We look for an easy Chicago victory in a game that should stay UNDER the total.
