The Atlanta Hawks are winning basketball games this month are already assured a winning record for the month of January. The team has already notched eight wins in the month highlighted by strong victories over the Utah Jazz and the Miami Heat. In the last game against the lowly Bucks, the Hawks had trouble holding onto the lead.

In the first game with a healthy squad, the Hawks stumbled. The Hawks allowed yet another game to slip away against the Bucks because they couldn't manufacture baskets late in a game they seemingly had in control before their collapse. That inability to make shots often translates into a tougher time on the defensive end, hence the gears that grind to a halt and allow the opposition to storm back and stun the Hawks. Their defense will have to improve if they hope to beat the Mavericks, who may have a new face in the lineup.

The Mavericks recently claimed Peja Stojakovic off of waivers. Stojakovic holds career averages of 17.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 34.0 minutes while shooting 45.0 percent from the floor, 40.1 percent from three-point territory and 89.5 percent from the foul line. He has played in 779 career games with Sacramento, Indiana, New Orleans and Toronto. The Mavericks hope that when he is healthy, he can contribute to the scoring punch and help replace some of the points that were lost when Caron Butler was lost for the season due to an injury. The Mavericks are not sure when he will be ready to play, but are eager to see what he can do.

In the meantime, Dallas is getting serious production from the bench to help win ball games. If the Mavericks keep getting great production off the bench than they will be a deadly team as we head towards the NBA post season. The Dallas bench, led by Jason Terry and J.J. Barea, scored 63 points as the Mavs rallied back from 15 points down in a recent game against the LA Clippers. Now they will get a test against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Mavericks are playing at an entirely different level and should easily handle the Hawks.
