| #1 Ranked Kansas Tangles With Colorado In Big 12 College Hoop Action |
After being voted the #1 team in the country, Kansas promptly went out and lost in lopsided fashion to their in-state rival Kansas State. The Wildcats looked like a team playing for their season as they led Kansas 42-33 at halftime and went on to win 84-68 as a +6 home underdog. This defeat alone may drop the Jayhawks from the top spot in the college basketball polls with the likely beneficiary being former #1 team Ohio State. The Buckeyes received 14 first place votes last week and along with #6 San Diego State are the only major conference teams with only one loss on the season. Before their upset victory against Kansas, Kansas State had lost their previous game at the hands of the Jayhawks’ opponents here. Colorado was never able to get any kind of margin on Kansas State but held on to win a tightly contested affair on their home floor in Boulder. At 16-10 the Buffalos are likely out of contention for an ‘at large’ NCAA tournament bid and would have to win the Big 12 tournament to earn an automatic bid. There’s a good chance they’ll end up in the NIT, however, and a win over a top flight opponent like Kansas would help this cause. Unfortunately, it’s hard to see Colorado pulling off the victory in this game for several reasons. First of all, they catch the Jayhawks coming off a loss on their home floor where Kansas has a 13-1 record this season. More problematic, however, is Colorado’s own schizophrenic home/away tendencies. At home Colorado has an excellent record of 13-2. On the road they’re 3-8 on the year overall and have just one win away from home in Big 12 play. Colorado did play Kansas hard at home in late January with the Jayhawks escaping with a four point win. Given their struggles on the road and Kansas’ tough home court—combined with the fact that the Jayhawks are coming off a loss—we don’t expect such a close game here. Look for a convincing Kansas victory by 20+ points over a Colorado team that’s in the wrong place at the wrong time.
