| Reeling Jazz Take On Pistons In Detroit |
In his 23rd year at the helm of the Jazz, it was apparent that head coach Jerry Sloan was nearing the end of his run but no one expected him to leave the way he did. Less than a week after agreeing to a one year extension, Sloan had it out with team president Kevin O'Connor after a home loss to the Chicago Bulls. The two men spent 45 minutes immediately after the contest hashing it out which immediately sent up a ‘red flag’ to the Jazz beat reporters who were used to Sloan making his postgame appearances like clockwork. Their concern was well justified as less than 24 hours later Jerry Sloan had resigned along with his longtime assistant Phil Johnson. Tyrone Corbin was named the new head coach and while he’s highly respected within the franchise and around the league he had no reason to think that he’d even be considered for a NBA head coaching gig for several years. The Jazz lost the first three games under Corbin and now hit the road to resume play after the All Star Break. As if Corbin didn’t have enough problems, he’s got to deal with injuries to Raja Bell, Andrei Kirilenko and Ronnie Price. He’s also got a situation on his hands with the team’s best player, point guard Deron Williams. Williams’ increasingly hostile relationship with Sloan was reportedly the catalyst for the coach’s departure and now there’s a lot of speculation that he’ll be leaving anyway after his contract is up at the end of the year. The Pistons have been a competitive pointspread team for most of the season and are right around .500 straight up at home. Historically, the Jazz have manhandled the Pistons in head to head play but we just can’t recommend a play on Utah at this point. The Jazz lost 13 of 17 heading into the All Star Break and until they show signs that they’re getting some stability under Corbin they’ll remain a ‘go against’. We’ll go with the hometown Pistons here who could even be a short underdog in this matchup.
