Mountain West Shootout In San Diego As Aztecs Host Cougars
Mountain West Shootout In San Diego As Aztecs Host CougarsThere’s a bumper crop of talent in the Mountain West Conference this season and on Saturday the two top teams—BYU and San Diego State—face off in a matchup that could determine the regular season conference champion. San Diego State is currently leading the Mountain West with a 12-1 record and is 27-1 overall. Their only loss was in Provo to second place BYU, which has a 11-1 record in conference and a 25-2 mark overall. The Aztecs are the #4 ranked college basketball team in the country while BYU is also in the top ten at #7.

With the exception of a disastrous run in the mid 1990’s under head coach Roger Reid, BYU typically puts a solid basketball team on the floor but you have to go back to the Danny Ainge era to find one that is this good on the national level. The Cougars’ primary weapon is senior guard Jimmer Fredette who is one of the best pure scorers in college hoops. Fredette leads the country in scoring with 27.7 PPG and scored 43 in BYU’s home victory over the Aztecs earlier this year. Fredette may be slightly undersized for the NBA at 6’2” but has such a well developed offensive game that he could overcome this physical liability—he has great shot selection, can hit the three and shoots free throws well. Perhaps his greatest asset is his ability to improvise on offense which at times can be reminiscent of the legendary ‘Pistol’ Pete Maravich.

As good as Fredette is, the Aztecs may be the better all around team and certainly has better balance and athleticism. They’ll also enter this matchup with something of a ‘chip on their shoulder’, not only due to the loss earlier this year at Provo’s Marriott Center but due to what they feel is a snub by the voters in the national polls. There had been an expectation that SDSU would jump as high as #2 after the top four teams in the country lost last week, but they wound up at #4 in the USA TODAY/ESPN Coach’s Poll. In the AP Top 25 they’re #6. New Mexico coach Steve Alford expressed his surprise at the relatively low ranking:

"I assumed San Diego State would knock on the door of the No. 1 or No. 2 spot. That's kind of surprising that they were fourth."

Aztecs’ coach Steve Fisher was more diplomatic:

"We're a good team, but I know there are a lot of good teams out there."

He is hoping for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament:

"We could be bantered about in that mix. I would hope we'd be in the talk of a 1 or 2 seed."

The Cougars have played well on the road this year, though their only two losses have come away from Provo. They lost a neutral court game to UCLA and were beaten by New Mexico at their infamously tough arena ‘The Pit’. The Aztecs are 13-0 at home, however, and won’t have to contend with the 4500 feet altitude of Provo, Utah. We look for San Diego State to continue to make a compelling case for a high national ranking as they avenge their earlier loss to the Cougars here.
