Heat Visit Spurs In Possible NBA Finals Preview
Heat Visit Spurs In Possible NBA Finals PreviewFeaturing LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh, the Miami Heat is definitely the most high profile team in the NBA. For most of the season, however, the San Antonio Spurs have had the best record in the league. On Friday night the Heat will travel to the AT&T Arena in San Antonio to challenge Tim Duncan and the Spurs in what could be an early preview of this season’s NBA Finals matchup.

The Spurs were expected to be a solid team this season, but their relative domination of the Western Conference with the league’s best record is something of a surprise. Much of that success has been due to the team’s ability to stay healthy—through the end of February the Spurs’ ‘big three’ of Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan have started all but one game. San Antonio is hoping that their luck holds out for the rest of the season, but they did receive some bad news earlier this week with the announcement that point guard Parker will miss 2-4 weeks with a strained calf muscle. Parker collided with Memphis’ Mike Conley in a victory over the Grizzlies on Sunday.

Miami took some time to get rolling at the start of the season, but lately they’ve been good as anticipated. They’re starting to pull away from the rest of the pack in the Southeast Division and have been neck and neck with Boston for the best record in the East. Even with the passing of the NBA trade deadline last week there’s still rumors that the Heat will be bolstering their lineup for the stretch run with some acquisitions via the waiver wire—the names most often mentioned are point guard Mike Bibby and shooting guard Troy Murphy.

Ironically, both teams could be in something of a ‘lookahead situation’ with more important games on deck. Miami will play the Chicago Bulls on Sunday and will need a win to try and hold on to second place in the Eastern Conference. The Spurs, meanwhile, will play the Los Angeles Lakers who could see an opening to make up some ground on San Antonio with Parker out of the lineup. While Spurs vs. Heat is a big game ‘on paper’, the next game on the schedule is actually more significant to the long range goals of both squads.

The Heat have a decent road record at 22-11 but keep in mind that the Spurs have the best home record in the league with only two losses at the AT&T Arena to date. With bigger games on deck for both teams we’ll side with the Spurs. Parker’s absence is a concern, but point guard play isn’t a Heat strength and we expect Duncan and Ginobili to compensate. Look for San Antonio to win and cover.
