NBA Western Conference Playoff Hopeful Grizzlies Host Thunder
NBA Western Conference Playoff Hopeful Grizzlies Host ThunderThe NBA Western Conference is always a season long battle for playoff qualification, and this year is no different. On Monday night a couple of teams looking to solidify their postseason status will do battle at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee as the surprising hometown Thunder host the Oklahoma City Thunder. Heading into the weekend the Grizzlies were in 4th place in the conference while Memphis was trying to hold on to the eighth and final postseason spot just 1 ½ game ahead of Utah and Phoenix.

For Oklahoma City, everything hinges on the status of NBA scoring leader Kevin Durant who sprained his ankle in a game against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday. He was helped to the locker room and return to the court with a ‘walking boot’ on his foot. Durant sat out Thursday’s practice and was listed as ‘doubtful’ for Friday night’s contest with the Atlanta Hawks. He was out of the boot on Thursday, but sat out practice anyway which didn’t make him happy in the least:

"I haven't done anything, man. It's killing me. I tried to get some shots up but they wouldn't let me, but I shot some free throws so I did a little something."

Thunder coach Scott Brooks is hopeful that Durant’s injury won’t force an extended absence from the lineup:

"He's day to day. We'll see how he feels tomorrow but I would say doubtful. With Kevin, he has the toughness, he loves to play, so when he's ready, he's going to step on the court and play at the level that we all are accustomed to seeing."

Brooks added that guard James Harden would start if Durant can’t go but aside from reserves having to pick up more minutes their approach to the game won’t change:

"I'm not going to change everything up if he doesn't play. We're just going to roll different guys in to get those minutes. But I'll make those decisions tomorrow if that happens."

With or without Durant, the Grizzlies are by no means an ‘easy out’. They’ve very quietly become a very tough opponent on their FedEx Forum home court with a record of 21-8 through March 4. The Grizz have also covered 13 of their last 18 home games and if Durant does play could be a small underdog in this game. That’s significant since Oklahoma City is just 5-11 against the spread this season as a favorite of five points or less.

Clearly the pointspread in this game will be directly influenced by Durant’s status, but with or without him we’d much rather back the Grizzlies in this spot. The Thunder are a serviceable 16-13 SU on the road, but we have great respect for the formidable home court advantage that Memphis has built on the FedEx Forum floor. Whether they’re a short priced home underdog with Durant in the lineup or a home favorite without him we look for the Grizzlies to win this game outright and cash tickets for NBA betting enthusiasts in the process.
