The Kentucky Wildcats and the Tennessee Volunteers Fight in an SEC Showdown
The Kentucky Wildcats and the Tennessee Volunteers Fight in an SEC ShowdownThe Kentucky Wildcats take to the road to finish off the college basketball regular season and will engage in a battle with the Volunteers of Tennessee.

Kentucky survived a last-second Vanderbilt in-bounds pass and came away with a 68-66 victory on Tuesday night to finish its home season at 15-0. The Wildcats have won 34 consecutive games at home, including 33 under coach John Calipari. Kentucky squandered a 13-point second-half lead against Vanderbilt, but hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final two minutes to pull out the victory.

Guard Scotty Hopson will be looking to make up for his subpar performance (3-of-8 shooting, 11 points) in the loss to the Wildcats at Lexington on Feb. 8. F Tobias Harris and C Brian Williams look to give the ‘Cats problems inside. PG Melvin Goins has become a solid leader of the Vols’ offense.

Something has to go against type March 6 when the Volunteers finish their regular season in Thompson-Boling Arena against their most hated rival, Kentucky. While Tennessee is only 3-4 in SEC home games, the Wildcats are 1-6 in SEC road encounters.

A few plays each way and both could have much better records in those departments. Two of the Vols’ home losses have come in overtime, while Kentucky probably could have won five of its six road defeats, the early-January setback at Georgia being the exception.

But as befits teams with either youth (Kentucky) or not enough offensive punch (Tennessee), they have been inconsistent—not just in weeks or months but during stretches of games. And it’s been enough to force one, perhaps both, to play on the first day of the SEC tournament.

The Wildcats will not solve their road woes and the Volunteers will get the big win at home.
