| Resurgent Sixers Face East Kingpin Celtics |
In Boston it’s basically ‘business as usual’ for a veteran, playoff tested team. The Celtics do what they need to do on a nightly basis to win games while keeping their players healthy for the postseason when they start to show their true ability. That makes sense in the ‘big picture’ for the Celtics but it makes them a difficult team to bet on—they are content just winning games and seldom exert the intensity needed to cover a margin. The 76ers are a team that is easy to overlook amid the big name contenders in the Eastern Conference, but they are a very dangerous foe and particularly on their home court. The Sixers are 21-10 at home this season, though they’ve struggled on the road with a 10-21 tally. They’ve been one of the best pointspread investments in the NBA this season and currently weigh in with a 39-22-2 ATS record overall. Boston doesn’t score a lot of points but instead wins with defense—they’re currently #2 in scoring defense with the Chicago Bulls holding a fractional lead in that category. They’re a very good road team as well, posting a 19-10 SU record. In fact, from a basketball betting standpoint they’re significantly more profitable away from the TD BankNorth Garden where they’re not laying big chalk numbers. Ultimately, this could be an ‘ambush’ spot for a Boston team with a lot of injuries to their key reserves. That’s a problem against Philadelphia since their bench leads the NBA in scoring. The Sixers have given Boston a very tough time this season—the Celtics won 84-80 at home and survived a 102-101 verdict in Philadelphia. Despite their improved performance both straight up and against the spread the Sixers are still somewhat ‘under the radar’ and will definitely be a short underdog in a matchup against one of the biggest ‘public’ teams in the NBA. We’ll call for the feisty 76ers to pull the outright upset here.
