Magic Try To Keep Pace In East Against Warriors
Magic Try To Keep Pace In East Against WarriorsThe Orlando Magic haven’t been playing exceptionally well of late, but with a 6-4 record in their last 10 games have picked up some ground on slumping Miami in their division and conference. They’ll face a tricky situation on Friday night as they make the long trip to the West Coast for a game against the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors have shown some incremental improvement under new coach Keith Smart. They’re never going to be mistaken for Boston or Chicago defensively, but they’ve shown some gradual improvement in points allowed and are playing a more controlled up-tempo style on offense.

Like many teams trying to regain competitive respectability in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors are a dramatically different team at home than on the road. At home they’ve got a solid 19-13 record, but on the road are just 8-22 on the season. They are a tricky matchup for most Eastern Conference teams, however, since they play a fast paced style that teams from the opposing conference see only once a year and have difficulty adjusting to.

The Orlando Magic is a tough team to figure out. They’re capable of looking like a championship contender one night and playing sloppy, careless basketball the next. Their big weapon is, of course, Dwight Howard in the middle who creates matchup problems for virtually every team in the league. They’ve pulled above .500 on the road but are still not an exceptional team away from home with a 16-13 SU record.

Oddly enough, despite their ugly SU road record the Warriors are a profitable pointspread play away from home where they’ve gone 16-14 ATS. And despite their decent home record they’ve lost money against the number on their own court. They’re in a dynamic where on the road they’re getting a lot of points and play a style that produces a lot of points, while at home they often lose and fail to cover against superior opponents.

That’s what this game looks like and for whatever tactical matchup difficulty the Magic will experience with Golden State’s up tempo style it’s nothing compared to Orlando’s matchup advantage with Dwight Howard against an undersized Warriors’ front line. The Warriors are in a tricky scheduling situation, playing their first game at home coming off of a seven game road trip and that’s seldom a spot where teams are at their best. We’ll look for Howard to have a big game as the Magic win and cover at Golden State.
