Thunder Challenge LeBron’s Heat In Miami
Thunder Challenge LeBron’s Heat In MiamiThe featured matchup on Wednesday night’s NBA basketball card will pit the Oklahoma City Thunder against LeBron James and the Miami Heat at the American Airlines Arena. While both teams are virtual locks to make the playoffs (Miami has already clinched a spot) this is an important contest for both as they’re trying to improve their postseason seeding positions. This game will be televised nationally on ESPN in the United States.

After beating the Los Angeles Lakers to end a five game losing streak and winning against Memphis at home, the ‘public’ is starting to flock to the Heat bandwagon once again. We’ve chosen to ‘reserve judgment’. You’ve got to give credit to Miami for coming up big against a tough opponent in a dire situation, but the Heat have been extremely enigmatic this year and at times look to have a very fragile psyche. The Heat has lost money for bettors in most pointspread situations--not surprising for the biggest 'public' team in the NBA. They've been an especially bad play at home where they're 12-10 ATS. They've won/covered two straight against winning teams heading into early week action against San Antonio, but they're still a poor play year to date against winning teams going12-16 ATS on the year, 4-9 ATS in the second half of the season.

The Thunder is, of course, led by NBA scoring leader Kevin Durant but he has an underrated cast around him. They’re maturing quickly and becoming a serious contender out West and have been very strong on the road going 19-14 on the road (though they’re just a breakeven ATS proposition away from home). To some extent, they’re a team that we look to ‘go against’ not because of a lack of talent but because they’ve become something of a ‘public’ side themselves. They’re not an exceptionally strong defensive team, meaning that it’s tough to lay points with them as a favorite.

In theory, the Heat has the defensive talent to at least contain Durant and shut down the rest of the Thunder offense but that’s the case with most opponents Miami faces and yet they’ve struggled to cover pointspreads. Miami is also in a brutal scheduling stretch dating back to their losing streak when they faced Chicago, Orlando, San Antonio and Portland. Since their win over the Lakers they’ve faced Memphis and will be coming into this game off a rematch with the Spurs and with a road game against divisional rival Atlanta on deck. This could be a ‘flat spot’ for Miami in which case the Thunder’s offense can keep them in the hunt throughout. We’ll take the points with Oklahoma City.
