Grizzlies Look To Secure Playoff Spot Against Knicks at MSG
Grizzlies Look To Secure Playoff Spot Against Knicks at MSGIf anything, the trade that sent Carmelo Anthony to New York City as a member of Knicks gave an infusion of excitement to their fanbase. Led by Anthony and Amare Stoudemire, the Knicks have been very competitive—if sometimes erratic—and face an interesting challenge on Thursday night as they host the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis is an easy team to overlook, but they’ve got a better W/L record on the season than New York. They’ve also got a much harder fight to secure a postseason spot—the Grizzlies currently have a precarious grip on the eighth and final playoff position in the West with a Utah, Phoenix and Houston just a couple of games behind.

With two of the top five point producers in the league, the Knicks can definitely score points. As a team they’re currently #2 in the NBA in team offense and since they trail the Denver Nuggets—whose biggest offensive weapon now wears a Knicks uniform—there’s every reason to expect they’ll take over the top spot within a few games. New York’s problem is on the other end of the court—they have a hard time keeping their opponents from scoring. When Carmelo Anthony arrived in New York he suggested that he wanted to help the team upgrade their defense. So far there hasn’t been much evidence of any progress and the Knicks are tied for 28th in scoring defense. To put this into perspective, the only team with a worse defense from a statistical standpoint is the Minnesota Timberwolves, and New York actually allows more points per game than the lowly Cleveland Cavaliers.

In previous years, Memphis was a team that didn’t have many offensive weapons and relied on defense to win games. This season, they’re a much more balanced team and rank in the middle of the table both offensively and defensively. The Grizzlies have become a very solid home team (23-10 SU) but have struggled on the road (14-21 SU). The combination of solid play and their ‘under the radar’ persona have also made Memphis a highly profitable pointspread investment. The Grizzlies are 41-25-1 against the number this season.

There’s a well known boxing adage that ‘styles make fights’ and to a large extent this is true in other sports as well. Some stylistic matchups favor certain teams and work against others. Our take on this game is that this is a tactical matchup that strongly favors the Knicks and particularly after the addition of Anthony. The Grizzlies don’t have the suffocating defense of a Chicago or Boston to contain the Knicks’ offense, nor do they have the playmakers to keep up with New York in an uptempo game. The Knicks beat the Grizzlies in Memphis on March 9th and things won’t get any easier for the visitors on the MSG floor. We expect a comfortable Knicks victory that covers the spread and goes OVER the total.
