Red Hot Bulls Visit Improving Nets
Grizzlies Look To Secure Playoff Spot Against Knicks at MSGThe Chicago Bulls are playing the best basketball in the NBA at the moment and have finally pulled even with the Boston Celtics atop the Eastern Conference standings. They’ll try to retain their lofty perch as they face the improving New Jersey Nets at Newark’s Prudential Center. New Jersey had improved dramatically over last year’s doormat performance already and with the acquisition of former Utah Jazz pointguard Deron Williams have a legitimate All Star running the offense.

New Jersey enters this game having won five straight—an incredible accomplishment considering the Nets won just 12 games during the entire 2009-2010 season. They’ve got a winning SU record at home (18-16) though like most teams in a rebuilding mode still struggle on the road (4-27). The team has moderated the talk of a possible playoff run that began around the time of the Deron Williams deal but they’ve still got at outside shot of making the postseason. New Jersey is 5.5 games back of the 8th place Indiana Pacers with 17 games remaining—they’ve got three other teams in the mix and would need to catch a few breaks but it’s still a possibility.

The Bulls are definitely going to the playoffs—in fact, they’ve already clinched the Central Division title so even with a monumental collapse they’d still be seeded 4th or better. At this point, a ‘monumental collapse’ doesn’t look likely with Chicago playing exceptional basketball. Heading into a Tuesday night home game against Washington (a team with 1 road victory this season) the Bulls had won six straight and 9 of their last 10. They have the #2 scoring defense in the NBA trailing the Boston Celtics by one tenth of a point. Chicago may be without Carlos Boozer here—he’s pulling another one of his ‘extended absences for a minor injury’ that became his calling card in Utah—but the team has kept winning without him.

For the Nets, they’re at their best when they can catch teams by surprise—they’ve done better against opponents from other divisions and the Western Conference than teams that are more familiar with them. Their opponents from the Eastern Conference—and particularly the Atlantic Division—know better than to take them lightly which is why they’re just 3-9 against their division and 12-25 against the Eastern Conference. The Bulls, on the other hand, have taken care of business against their own conference with a 25-12 record (as well as a perfect 12-0 in their division).

With all due respect to New Jersey’s recent run of success, this is just a horrible tactical matchup for them. They’re facing a nasty defensive team, yet the Nets struggle to score points ranking #28 in scoring offense (94 PPG). Deron Williams has given them a proven ‘go to’ scorer, but they lost a lot of depth in the deal to get him. The scheduling does New Jersey no favors either—Chicago comes in off what should be an easy home win against the worst road team in the NBA and with only Indiana and Sacramento on deck. New Jersey is a scrappy team that usually turns in a solid effort, but they’re facing a different class of opponent here. Look for a Bulls win/cover in a game that stays UNDER the total.
