The No. 16 Alabama State Hornets Take on The No. 16 UTSA Roadrunners In Round One
The No. 16 Alabama State Hornets Take on The No. 16 UTSA Roadrunners In Round OneThe Alabama State Hornets did not have a winning record, yet here they are in a playoff game against the UTSA Roadrunners. Both teams are looking for a win and the right to advance and play Ohio State in the next round of March Madness.

With the worst record in the tournament, no one is expecting that Alabama State can win a ball game and that is the reason they are listed as three point underdogs against the Roadrunners. The record is not impressive but this is a Hornets team that has had a remarkable turnaround.

Alabama State will enter the tournament having won 10 of its last 11 games. The one loss was by one point at Grambling State, a team the Hornets beat by 17 on March 12 to win the SWAC Tournament. Senior forward Tremayne Moorer and junior guard Tramaine Butler are the team’s two stars. Moorer’s case is interesting. He’s only played 15 games this season for a handful of reasons, but leads the team with 12.5 points per game. His leadership doesn’t hurt, either.

But defense, overall, is what got the Hornets dancing for the second time in three seasons. The Hornets held opponents to 63 points per game and six times held foes to 53 or fewer points.

That defense wil be challenged to stop the guard play of the Roadrunners. UTSA senior Devin Gibson, who averages 17 points per game and another guard, sophomore Melvin Johnson III, is good for 14.8 ppg. Gibson is the only player in the country averaging at least 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and 2.5 steals per game.

Alabama State will have the size advantage down low and will be able to slow down the guards and keep their Cinderella story alive for one more game.
