Spurs Travel To ‘Mile High City’ To Take On Nuggets
Spurs Travel To ‘Mile High City’ To Take On NuggetsThe expectation among the mainstream sports media was that Denver’s trade that sent Carmelo Anthony and Chauncey Billups to New York suggested a team that was ‘throwing in the towel’ on the 2010-2011 NBA season. It hasn’t really worked out that way—since the trade the Nuggets have gone 10-4 SU and made a ton of money for bettors going 13-1 ATS. They’ll face a tough challenge on Wednesday night as they host the team with the league’s best record, the San Antonio Spurs. For the Spurs, it’s been business as usual as the team has won consistently since the start of the year. Heading into this week they boasted the best home record (32-3) and road record (24-10) of any team in the league and that’s the sign of a disciplined and dangerous playoff contender.

For Denver, the departure of the petulant Anthony was clearly ‘addition by subtraction’ in terms of team chemistry but when the deal went down there was a good deal of concern about the loss of point guard Chauncey Billups. Those fears proved to be unwarranted, as newly acquired Raymond Felton and Ty Lawson have been a more than adequate replacement. Even more impressive is the fact that despite the loss of Anthony and his 26+ points per game the Nuggets haven’t seen a drop off in their offensive potency—they’re currently the NBA’s #1 scoring offense averaging 107.2 PPG.

San Antonio doesn’t dominate any one statistical category but it’s impossible to argue with their success—they just win almost every night regardless of the opponent or venue. At this point, the Spurs’ biggest challenge could be maintaining their intensity down the stretch when they’ve got a sizable lead in both their division and the Western Conference. In the Southwest Division, they hold a 7.5 game lead over the Dallas Mavericks and in the overall conference standings they’re 6.5 games ahead of the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers.

Overall, our thinking is that this is a game that will have far greater importance to the Nuggets than to the Spurs. San Antonio’s postseason position is pretty much set at this point, while Denver is still in a tough battle to hold on to their #5 seed in the West. Entering the week only 3 total games separated Denver from 8th place with Portland and New Orleans also in the mix. The matchup with the Spurs is the only game against a winning opponent until an April 3rd road game against the Lakers and with two games against Sacramento and one against Washington there’s no possible ‘lookahead’ for the Nuggets.

As far as San Antonio is concerned, they keep grinding out the wins but they’ve not been a very good betting proposition of late. They’ve won 12 of their last 17 straight up but have gone only 6-11 against the spread. Check the status of Nuggets’ guard Raymond Felton, who missed a few games with injury over the weekend but even without him in the lineup this looks to be a spot for the Nuggets to get a straight up win and a pointspread cover.
