Missouri St. Takes Aim at Miami in the NIT
Missouri St. Takes Aim at Miami in the NIT Missouri State had one of its best years in the program’s history, yet they were still not invited to the NCAA Tournament. Now they will look to take their frustrations out on the No. 2 seed in the NIT, the Miami Hurricanes.

The Bears were relegated to the NIT despite completing one of their best regular-seasons in the program’s NCAA Division I history. They won the MVC regular-season title. They won 25 games and presented the NCAA selection committee with an RPI ranked No. 43. In some seasons for some schools, that is good enough.

But MSU, with four senior starters, regrouped for in time to take the fight to Murray State and advance to the NIT’s second round on Tuesday. Even the NIT selection committee wasn’t that impressed with the resume—MSU was given a No. 3 seed—the Bears outplayed the Racers in almost every facet of the game.

Two players make the Bears go—forwards Kyle Weems and Jermaine Mallett. Both are 3-point threats who can also drive to the basket and rebound. They are too quick for most big forwards to cover, yet give smaller players fits because of their strength. Weems, the MVC Player of the Year, gets the ball when the Bears need a big basket. He won their first round game in the MVC Tournament with a bank shot in the final seconds against Southern Illinois. Mallett showed he was ready for the postseason with a career-high 23 points against Murray State on Tuesday night in the NIT first-round win.

The Bears are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games and the Hurricanes are 1-6-1 ATS in their last eight games following a win.

Guided by a motivation to perform well and senior leadership, the Bears upset the Canes to advance in the NIT.
